I bought a laptop 3 years ago from alienware and its broken now(desktop i had from them also broke recently), definitely a hardware problem. It doesnt turn on when i have it in place normally, however if i turn it on its side it turns on but then keeps restarting saying they is a hardware malfunction or something. Before it broke it had always been overheating a huge amount.

Obviously my normal warranty is gone it was one year or something but i read something about ireland having 6 year warranty legislation? Is this true and do i have any chance at getting the laptop repaired/ replaced for free?

Never buying alienware again! Simple is best

No chance of getting it repaired for free. I never heard of that 6 year warranty legislation.
In fairness 3 years is pretty good before it gave trouble

You have 6 years in which you can take a case with the retailer of the product, where you can argue that the product is expected to last a reasonable length of time before failure. Reasonable length of time is the key here though, quite often you'll need the Small Claims Court to decide if you've got a reasonable length of use out of your laptop. SCC could rule in your favour, but then again may throw your case out. They may also come to an arrangement where both you and alienware split the cost of repair.

if it works when you change the physical orientataion then it is a mechanical problem - loose connection and unlikely to be a manufacturing defect

    reseat the RAM
check it's not the power cable - this is very common on old laptops

overheating - did you ever clean the fan / upgrade the BIOS or ensure that there was plenty of space under it, are the little rubber feet missing /replaced ?

they would argue that it might be because it had been mistreated / dropped at some stage and in fairness that is the most likely reason

6 years , not a chance. Design life on hard drives is only 5 years something that hasn't changed in the last 30 years. Apart from corporate customers paying more than the market value on support you rarely get more than three years warranty even if you pay extra. [yes in a lot of cases you can buy a replacement second hand for less than the cost of the support]
