First Gig With a Dr Z

Played a gig in Naaaavan hey the other night with the aforementioned. She's a 2x12 38 watt combo. Heavy as hell ...my arms were sore after lugging into the venue. Flicked her onto standby for a bit and got straight into into the first song "dancin in the moonlight". Sounded a little muddy on the rhy pickup (PUP set too high methinks) but man what a sound when i flicked to the bridge PUP...cut right through...lovely rich harmonics with endless sustain. A great tone. I had to attenuate it a little as even at just shy of 40 watts she is a tad on the loud side for pub gigs. Very impressed though with the sound through the whole set. Didn't use any pedals either...just straight into the amp.... I've heard these amps are made for strats but I had no complaints with my Yamaha 335 copy with Bareknuckle 'buckers...I think I've finally found the tone I've been searching for.:D

I highly recommend yamaha Super axe's...Lovely looking and sounding 335 lookalikes. They come up on Ishibashi every now and again...actually after a little google there is an SA2000 in the used section for 93000 yen. It's a little fancier than mine with block inlays and MOP on the headstock. I was after the Out of phase Peter Green tone so thats why I wanted to change the stock pickups to a PG blues set but the original pickups were fine. Do a search on youtube for toz71 and you'll find some of the tones pre and post PUP changeout.

This never happened unless you provide a sound clip :D
Seriously, I'd love to hear it.

excuse the quality....singer needs to record his vocals on the tracks on the website and the instruments haven't been mixed properly but check it out here www.myspace.com/bitethebulletcoversband ....that's the maz 38...I'll also try and post clips of the mini when I get around to it.

    cheers brutha!
I received a 5W tone monster off the ould fear an phoist the other day. What a great little amp too. I think I've got the Dr Z bug...sweet sounding amps. The mini has lovely power tube saturation at bedroom levels. It can be attenuated all the way down to 1W I think with the build in power soak.

Sounds great, really cool 70s rock type tones there!!
I think I read somewhere that Ken Fisher (Trainwreck) said if you can't afford a 'Wreck then get a Dr Z, that's a major compliment from him. Never got to play one though, do you still want yours?

LOL no bother ...Yeah If I ever get sick of it Paolo sure I'll let ya know ..... I can't believe a 38 watt amp could be so loud. I suppose I have the gain all the way up on the amp and the master nearly dimed also :)

I can believe that. My combo is about 3 watts and can get damn loud. I'm even contemplating getting a Weber Micromass attenuator for it.

Do you gig with that? I'm starting to think maybe the Dr Z mini might hang Ok in a band situation ?

Nope, I just play guitar at home. I wouldn't mind gigging with it but I'm not that good of a guitarist. :o

I do think that a small amp like this would work for a gig with PA support though.

I've gigged in a few small venues with the GA5 (5 Watts) and it wasn't miked. Places like Charlies in Cork. Running it through the 2X12 or 4X12, volume set at noon is enough to keep up with a drummer.
Sure, there's not a lot of clean headroom, but I don't need much anyway. :D
At 38 Watts there wont be much difference between your amp and a 100 Watter.

Yeah I have the Z mini which is only 5 watts too. I, like you. don't use much clean sound at all really. If I do I just back off the volume pot on the guitar. I might bring out the mini for the small gigs and see how she fares out.

This is actually quite interesting because I have often wondered if my Tiny Terror would handle a gig at 15W.

I mean I cannot turn it onto that setting at home because it is so LOUD!!! and that makes my neighbour cranky:p

But even on the 5w setting it is bloody loud.

I gig with a pod xt live for convenience more than anything but I would be curious to let the little fella (the amp:D) out in public

I hear Mr Rob chappers over on youtube did and said all he had was his backline TT and he had no issues at all.
