Fas Graduate work placement program

MOD EDIT: Apparently all the information in this post is wrong. But talk to FAS and they can give you the information you need.

    Hi all,

    A late reply to KKV.

Would anyone be interested in securing work placement/experience in companies based in Eastern Europe and Asia.

This would be in conjunction with the Fas Work Placement Program.

The idea behind it is that through international business contacts, these placements can be organised for you based on your requirements/qualifications (graduates only) on a 3-6-9 month duration as the Fas December review states will be acceptable.

The work experience will be aimed towards your field of study making it valuable to your future career and your CV.

The renumeration for your work placement duration will be paid by the Fas WPP (flights and Visa paid by you).

At the moment the positions will be available for graduates of the engineering/science disciplines only but this may expand (based on demand to marketing/business/built environment/arts etc).

"The attraction and benefit of this is that, based on the current unemployment assistance/job seekers allowance payable, this will be at least or more than enough to provide a normal living wage/lifestyle for the duration of the placement in the countries that will be providing the placement and also a great working experience for you".

For example 6 months electronic/mechanical engineering experience in shanghai for a multinational company would be something we could set-up for you.

If anyone is interested or has any questions regarding this please ask or make comment.

    Regards

    Mecho

I am on the list for a good few but never heard anything back. My local office know very little about it. At first I thought it was for people who just graduated but they put me on the lists although I have plenty of experience!

Mmm, this program is relatively new so it is early days in terms of administration.

Can i ask you, what type of placement are you looking for and for how long ?

For more information the programme go to the FAS home page at www.fas.ie At the top of the page you will see a link for the Work Placement Programme. This outlines the eligibility criteria for both the participant and the provider. You will also see that the eligibility criteria changes effective 1st December and thus the programme will be accessible to more people.

If you are interested in the programme, go to the jobseeker section on the home page also, then 'Find a Job' and then 'Job Type'. You will see Work Placement Programme 1 and Work Placement Programme 2. Click into either for more information on the opportunities available.

If you are interested in any of them, contact your local FAS office for more details on the employer. If you are eligible, the local FAS office will give you contact details for the employer. You shoud then forward your CV to the employer and hope that they are interested in setting up an interview with you.

Thanks for that but like I said I HAVE contacted my FAS office and they know very little about it. They WOULDN'T give me any info on the employers. They said you get put on the list if you are eligible. They took ages looking up stuff before even know if I was eligible. But I am on a list for a few of them now and have heard nothing back. My point is that the FAS staff are quite clueless about the whole thing! Surely they should know what is going on!

So basically you don;t get paid for this work am I right? You just retain you social welfare payments?

Tough doing 37 hour weeks for €200 or what will be less after the budget.

I suggest you go back to your local FAS office or if you are registered with FAS you can ring 1800 611 116 for more informatin on the programme. You don't go on a list. You have to apply directly to the employer yourself. If you are interested in one of the opportunities contact FAS. If you don't have access to the internet, go to your local office where you will see all the WPPs available on touch screen kiosks. Again if you are interested, talk to FAS staff. They will ask you what DSFA payment you are on and when they confirm you are eligible, they will give you contact details for the employer and you send your CV to the employer yourself.

Do you work for FAS? I find it strange that you tell me this and my FAS office tell me the opposite! I'll call to them on Monday.

My boyf rang up today enquiring about this and asking for an apt and they gave him the whole spiel about having to be on the allowance. He corrected them saying how it is due to change on tuesday dec 1st, and will be open to those on benefit and she eventually acknowledged it albeit reluctantly.

Is it that they arent informed yet or aren't ready to deal with the amount of work for them it is going to bring.......there are tonnes of graduates who worked part time etc who are on benefit as opposed to allowance..

Yeah but better than sitting around waiting for the magical job that just isnt there...looks much better you got up and tried to find work in your field even if it was for 200 per week..plus your job prospects increase and you can always apply for other paid jobs while on it

    Hi Mood

Im very familiar with the programme. Check out the FAS website as well for the change in qualifying criteria. I hope you have better luck on Monday and get the information you require. As I said, if you are already registered with FAS ring their help line 1800 611 116 and someone will help you.

If you happen to be involved with FAS and/or the running of the programme it would be great if you could highlight that people are being misinformed by FAS staff.

    Thanks

Wow, providing free labour to companies in countries that have taken a lot of jobs out of Ireland, expecting people to live (or 'just about exist') in these countries on 800 euro a month - FAS *really* have their priorities right, don't they!

    Hi mecho,

I would be interested in the kind of international work experience you mentioned, if it were indeed possible to live off the amount of money received (excl. flights etc, i know). Is this an official/seperate scheme or only something that may happen in the future? I'm a mechanical engineer and i've been looking for a job for a few months. I'm not receiving any benefits at the moment.

Any more information or links you could provide would be very welcome.

In the "State Benefits" forum he made the same posts and was called out on them. It would appear that there are no international opportunities here. Well, thats not true as such, if a company want, they can send you around the world, but it's hugely unlikely they're gonna ever do that, and you can't claim dole whilst abroad, so...

Yeah, I dropped in to FÁS and they said there was no overseas placement programme. Although nobody there seemed particularly well-informed...

The information posted by Mecho or Mecho Frank is incorrect, misleading and should be ignored.

The FAS Workplacement Programme has no links whatsoever with any overseas experience.

This poster is misleading you and is trying to use the FAS Workplacement Progreamme to entice people overseas.

Be warned this poster does not have any links with the FAS Work Placement Programme.
