The unemployment crisis dramatically worsened last month with more than 400,000 people now seeking state benefits.

Official figures today revealed the numbers signing-on almost doubled in the last year with the unemployment rate now 11.8%.

The Central Statistics Office said more than twice as many men as women are on the Live Register.

How long til it reachs 500,000?

I have taken a day off sick today, first time in a long time as I want to see what the situation with the job market is and because management in my company are driving me mad. I might as well not have bothered. It is as depressing as hell and there are little if any jobs around.

Try it from the unemployed/redundant side of the fence, its even worse!

Its easy to tell people youre lucky you have a job, but if the company is suffering in the current recession then it can be hell.
You are doing the right thing in looking at all the options even if this means removing yourself from a stressful situation in order to do so.
Do not be public at work with your feelings about leaving if leaving is on your mind. You can always fall back on your present employment while times are hard if you dont lose your temper and burn bridges prematurely.
Read the first topics in this section about "how to leave", "what to tell your new boss about leaving" etc....
Its best to be cool and detached about these things now in these times

I fear it won't be long at all before this Country tops 500,000 unemployed. In fact, I heard one commentator tonight say that his worst case scenario is that it could increase by another 300,000 by the end of the year. That would mean an incredible 700,000 people unemployed from a population of just under 4,000,000.

    Absolutely staggering.

If that is aimed at me, trust me i have been in both situations, working in a company suffering in the recession, and being on the dole in a country suffering from recession, trust me the second is worse.

Admittedly for most people in most sectors while they work they will get paid and at least their money is secure while they have a job.
But I know of some people who have struggled in failing companies, have had heated arguments with their employers about money owing for wages etc going back months and have had to leave, then find themselves in debt and not able to pay their way because of the missed months with no income at all trying to keep a dead company afloat.
While the dole is bad, working for nothing is worse.............

The whole thing is turning into a total sh1tstorm.

Was it last November/December they predicted that by the end of 09 there would be approx 300-350k unemployed. They fcuked that up too.

My bro is moving to New York Thursday and depending on how he gets on its likely that I will be joining him in the not too distant future.

Depends on what you wanna do.Ive been doing a bit of research as to whats happening. There seems to be alot of jobs for educated people ie a degree but I suppose there are alot of other factors, mainly the Visa.
I will give him a few weeks to survey things and see then.
