:rolleyes:Hi guys, Just very recently bought a new road bike and i am wondering what is the best type of chain lube to use and how often do you need to lube the chain to keep it turning freely and in good condition.... You see i am one of those guys who used to use a good oul drop of 3 in 1 oil or a good squirt of WD40 on me chains in the past,it did the job but makes the chain and surrounding areas on the bike look filthy and crap i admit.... Their must be a good clear lube that you can get for chains nowadays i presume... Any advice on this please, also any names of good sprays or cleaners to use when i am washing my bike cos i want to keep it looking new and shiny......Cheers.........

    Finish Line for me.

Dry Lube for summer and Wet Lube (extreme conditions) for the rest of the year. Red bottle and green bottle respectively.

Just drop into local bike shop and pick up some White Lightening - Wet Ride. I use wet ride because I really think that with the Irish climate you'd have to be applying the lighter solutions almost weekly. With the wet ride I'm happy enough to let it go 3 weeks or so.

Also WD40 is only a degreaser, and 3-in-1 oil is not a lubricant.

+1 for Finish Line. Need to get the dry lube cause I'm fed up cleaning my chain weekly from the wet lube.

Give it a while before applying lube. The chain manufacturer's lubricant tends to be pretty great, so don't degrease it off if it's still doing the job.

I've seen this claim that 3-in-1 is based on vegetable oil, but it doesn't seem to be true.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3-In-One_Oil

It's a very light oil. It is a lubricant, and it isn't vegetable-based.

3-in-1 is not a disaster by any means if you are stuck and it's all that is available, the Wikipedia page even says it was originally designed for bicycles. Certainly wouldn't put it in the same class as WD40. I wouldn't buy it specifically though.

I too currently use Finish Line, wet in the wet and dry in the dry.

Cant understand why people are recommending the dry lube, gone from the chain after 3 hours! Wet lube every time for me, great stuff.

yeah i started using finish line wet on my fixed gear in the last few months. the difference is phenomenal. no noise from the drivetrain whatsoever. it does require the occasional clean though, as it's pretty viscous stuff.

how do other people go about cleaning/degreasing? do you always fully degrease before application, or is it ok to give the chain a wipe and reapply the lube?

Not in the dry it's not, I had it on my touring bike for 11 days around Sardinia and indeed on my road bike during the week or so of summer we had there ending last week.

Of course in Ireland this does mean 99% of the time I am using wet lube.

Fully degreasing is better but if I don't have time I will just wipe and reapply, the latter is certainly better than not relubing at all.

How do you fully degrease the chain/derailer?

use a degreaser. halfords have a few different ones. i find the finish line product works well for me, although i generally don't let the drivetrain get too filthy.

after using the degreaser, rinse the chain, allow it to dry, and then apply the lube. keep the degreaser away from hubs and bottom bracket.
