Some advice?

Just looking for some advice from the fitness gurus here. It's my first post in this forum so be gentle :)

Basically, I was on a football team for several years up until last year, when I pretty much was fed up with the early Saturday morning kick-offs (:D) and gave it up. However, I've been missing it recently and have decided to go back for the new season which starts in September.

I haven't been having very regular exercise since I quit if I'm being honest, so after I finish school next week (I'm 15 btw) I'm going to dedicate the summer months to getting myself fit and ready for the new season. I'm hoping to lose a bit of weight and just generally be able to keep up with the pace of the game for over an hour. Once I've done that I'll set my sights on adding a bit of muscle aswell.

So, basically what I'm asking is are there certain things I should be doing which are more effective than others? Tbh I was just planning to start doing some regular running and jogging to do the job, but if anyone here has any suggestions I'd appreciate it.
