    http://www.visionofhumanity.org/gpi/results/rankings/2009/

    Ireland ranks 12th.

NZ ranks 1st, UK is 35th and Switzerland is 18th. Afghanistan and Iraq, as expected, is 143rd and 144th (last).

The 12th place, while better than UK and France, is actually a huge drop from the 6th place in 2008 and 4th place in 2007! :o

    Any predictions for 2010?

New Zealand, Pighead's arse. Seen a documentary a few years back about New Zealand and it looked far from fcuking peaceful. This is obviously NZ propaganda at work. Does this look like a place you'd like to visit for a couple of weeks of calm and quiet reflection?

I wanna move to New Zealand...
It looks like a really cool place. And Fight of the Concords are from there... :p

But it does look like a fun and chill place. Had a friend who lived there too.
I might someday... Just for a year or two maybe...

They've obviously never heard of the concept of 'peace through superior firepower'.

Though I'm curious as to how they figure that arms exports makes a country less peaceful. They're giving the weapon to someone else to use or not use.

    Most countries do.

Anyway how the hell did Ireland beat Switzerland. I would have thought Switzerland was more peaceful then us.

On a side note. How is Japan 7th? Are they not constantly bickering with China and North Korea over re writing history, nuclear tests etc???

Ireland was let down by all of those politicians shooting themselves in the feet everytime they opened their mouths.

Ireland was 6th last year, and 4th the year before.

I wonder if that's an accurate reflection of the joblessness / they-took-our-jobs / bank scams and overall negativity in the society.

It surely has made life peaceful for me..!

But they aren't physically killing each other...Besides ,these days the Japanese can use computer simulations to test surgery and diseases on, as opposed to using Chinese and Koreans....

    How is Australia 19th?

    Hostility to foreigners/private property 1
    Level of violent crime 2
    Likelihood of violent demonstrations 2
Perceptions of criminality in society 2
Number of external and internal conflicts fought: 2002-2007 2.5 (do they not have their force out in Iraq / Afghan? Thats's probably why)

Damn. I thought by here you meant Ireland. I was trying to play on the whole peaceful thing by getting outraged by a harmless comment.
    :(

That's what I was going to say.

New Zealand gangs scare the crap out of me and I've never even really come across them. Was having a debate about it with my OH last night ad he was going on about drug gangs in Limerick. At least they're violent for a sort of reason (I said sort of, ok). NZ gangs are violent for the sake of it. A lot of them aren't involved in drugs.

I can see how NZ is peaceful otherwise, I think it's all the pineapple lumps. They lull in to a catatonic state.

/puts hand in bag fo more pineapple lumps

they have fought in the exact same conflicts as the UK, who got 3.5 for that

I doubt its a simple as 'number of conflicts'.

In fact, it would be downright daft do just count the conflicts. UK has been a lot more actively involved in middle-east and have lost more men to enemies (and to friendly fire).

Are ya mad, have ya not seen the crazy weapons that their army carries FFS.

    Si vic pacem, para bellum.

The creators of this ranking system very obviously do not believe in this old tenet that has served Switzerland very well for the last few centuries.

(There's also a related theory that says 'an armed society is a polite society', but it doesn't truly apply to Swtizerland)
