    Boxing Coaching cert
    NCEHS Fitness instuctor cert
    NCEHS PERSONAL TRAINER cert
    ISSA PERSONAL TRAINER cert
    NESTA PERSONAL TRAINER cert
Loads of ****ty 1's such as spinning, saq etc..
Sports Nutrition and Advanced Sports Nutritrion Dip SNHS

I played GAA, Soccer, Boxing as a kid and tried Kenpo-:o
and lots of other things like that, now i train MMA and BJJ and run my own MMA club over 2 years now and work as a free lance PT.

Qualifications dont mean that much to me anymore, its more about experience and learning as you go, after i finished my 1st fitness course i had knowledge but learned more from hands on experience than the course, but without the course the hands on would not have been the same.

Rush Boxing club and Rush Martial Arts head coach.

i did the health, fitness and leisure course in i.t. tralee, cert, diploma and returned after 7 years to complete my Bachelor of science degree just last year.
Completed the uksca qualification in 2007.
Attending the cscs exam in dcu on saturday.

Just completed the setanta college certificate in physical fitness and conditioning studies a few days ago as well.

The fitness instructor qualifications were awarded by ncef aftr the certificate in tralee, done a few other courses fitness wise over the years, spin, fitball and pilates with the ntc in town.
Applied for a masters just recently but not too optimistic of getting that, hopefully im wrong!

do you mind me asking what your case study involved for the UKSCA, and why do the CSCS when you already have it (i.e an S & C cert)?? im guessing you're working with a couple of rugby teams? / a big one!

EDIT: while your at it, how did the setanta college one compare?

Case study was on a paralympic swimmer at the 2006 world championships. I got involved with swimmers by chance really and now do most of my work with them from 10 years to 30 years of age.

Im doing the cscs cos its more recognized at the mo and id just like to have it. It also makes me recap and hit the books again and keep things fresh i think.
Im not working with any rugby team yet but i was lucky enough to do my thesis with the munster development squad.

And i have to say the setanta course is the best out there i think. Found it hugely relevant, up to date and very applicable to people involved with teams of any standard. You also have the Bronze medalist from the soul olympics teaching and correcting you on your oly lifts!

Oh okay. He's a great guy. He'll never stay in the same hotel as me again because I literally wouldn't leave him alone with the questions, but he was very patient!

A big reason why i like the course, you get plenty off opportunity to ask questions of the other coaches and people with vast amounts of experience like martin above and Dr. liam hennessy. Something i feel is lacking in the strength and conditioning side here is the lack of places to do internships and the like. you'd love to spend a week with these people seeing how they do things and bugging them with questions!.

If you ever want to see how i do dryland work with swimmers your more than welcome! (You will of course have to sign a vow of silence and refer to me as sensei at all times, and bow when i enter the room :D)

Well that sensei business is my cup of tea, so yes, I'll do it. Sounds interesting we should set it up some time. Consider the invitation reciprocated.

edit: Were you on the Setanta course with Jimmy and Conor?

    :P

Just wondering what sort of qualifications have been amassed, and what background ye came from sport wise etc......

    Thanks

Right so now that the dust has settled on a busy weekend I'll answer this as the original thread title was Fitness Professionals/Roper, and the original posts had some more direct questions for me.

First though, a word on your motivations/intentions. I'm pretty willing to accept most things on face value and I certainly have nothing to hide in the way of qualifications, but someone suggested to me by pm that this thread may have been one of two things. Either a) an attempt to sully my good name by not referring to me as a professional intentionally in the thread title, or b) an attempt to call me out over my qualifications to dispense my opinions on this board. Now I think a) was more likely a very poor attempt at humour, and since I'm a straight guy and ask straight questions, I'll take it at face value that you were just interested in what I've done to do what I do for a living.

Firstly, I've just completed A Setanta course RTWTS, which included my IAWLA Level 1 cert. That has a HETAC award (which replaces FETAC for those wondering) and a few other certs to go along with it. I'll probably do CSCS later this year, mostly because, like mushykeogh, it's the most recognised and it will be interesting to hit the books. Aside from that, I have a BA in History, Literature and Psychology from DCU, an NCEA Cert in Electronic Engineering, a full clean drivers licence and I can fit conservatories, lay pretty decent block, cook a delicious meal out of almost anything in my fridge, roll my tongue and make farting noises with my ear and the palm of my hand.

All that makes me, by some people's metric, pretty darn unqualified to do what I do. And yet, I'm doing it. And the reason I'm doing it, is that I didn't go chasing certs because I neither had the time nor money to do it when I was starting out. Instead, I took it upon myself to go out and work with real people, more often than not for no money. What that means is that while now I know lots of guys who are bitching about having a sports science degree and are working at a Microsoft helpdesk, I am working in their industry because I took another road.

Most people get qualified in something, not just fitness, and feel like the fvcking world OWES them something now that they have it. Or they sit back and wonder why the jobs haven't come calling for them. I just did it the other way, I went and tried to do the job as best I could and then asked myself what I needed to do it better.
