Relatively new to cycling but getting out on my spanking new hybrid a few times a week. Am pretty fit, but struggled big time on a cycle at the weekend....in fact nearly died...well I exaggerate of course. Anyway, after about 40km on the N11 the legs just packed it in. Felt like I was cycling in slow motion and the lowest gear felt like the highest....murder. Ok all you experts....How can I avoid that happening again, not enough food or water? ..Did 70km today no problem...hmmmmm puzzling..Thank you.

    :p My first post!!!!!

You seem to have solved it yourself :), most likely reason is lack of energy or water. Had you been eating on the bike/drinking much?

there's a few threads on it here, but you probably could have done with more food before leaving home(and a glass or 2 of water aswell). And after an hour you'd want to start taking in something like 500 - 750ml/hr of water and 30 - 60grammes of carbs/hr, so bringing more figrolls/isotonic drink or some bars would help. You'd probably manage 40km spins fine with just some water on a hot day but when your going further its defo a good idea to start getting more food in as you go.

Horses sweat, men perspire, ladies glow. :)

It probably wasn't food-related if you were exhausted after 40km, unless you did a very hard ride the day before.

Dioralyte in the water bottle works a treat.
