    How to... Origami!
Are you sick of sitting around at the weekend wondering what to do? Fancy learning something new and different in a friendly environment? Then learn while having fun and come to the National Print Museum on 13th & 14th June. Not only will you get to learn the history of printing, but also, with the help of Japanese teacher Naomi Fleury, you can learn the art of Origami - an ancient art form of folding paper. It can be an excuse to get out of the house, or something for all the family, with sessions for both young and old.

It is said that if you make a thousand origami cranes at a new crossroad in your life you will be forever lucky in that endeavour. And let’s face it; we could all do with some luck around now! Naomi Fleury was born in Japan in 1969 and has been learning Origami since she was merely 3 years old. She first came to Ireland in 1998 for a year to teach primary schools kids calligraphy, language, song and origami but moved here permanently in 2002. The skills Naomi learnt in Origami led to her starting up her own business based around cards, jewellery and other items reflecting her Japanese background. She has since completed an Origami Teachers Course and is the only person in Ireland with this qualification. So how better to learn a cultural art form than from a native of the country.

She will be running three different workshops in the National Print Museum throughout the Summer months, both children and adult courses. One group will master the art of origami box making, while the other groups will learn how to make hanging decorations and cards using the same origami techniques. The children’s group will create unique artistic pieces using special origami skills. These workshops can have 8 people per group, are short in duration - mostly 2 – 3 hours and not only will all the materials be supplied to learn how to make the origami objects, but also you will get to see some of the works of Naomi, including her jewellery and hanging decorations.

The adult workshops cost €45 per person and the children’s €20, but if you become a ‘friend’ of the Museum you can get 15% off this and all other workshops the Museum host, including calligraphy, book making and letterpress printing to name just a few. This is clearly an opportunity not to be missed, and you can always grab a coffee with your new classmates in the Gutenberg Café afterwards!

They are held in the Museum overlooking the historical printing presses and thousands of wooden letters, in the quiet yet beautifully idealic Garrison Chapel of Beggars Bush Barracks. When you pick up a magazine or a book do you think about the history behind how it got to you? History of the printing press, its inventors and the years spent putting books together by hand? Well you can learn all about all of these processes while visiting the museum.

All workshops need to be booked and paid for in advance, for this and any other info, call the National Print Museum on 01 6603770, drop them an email at info@nationalprintmuseum.ie or check out www.nationalprintmuseum.ie
