Poor Greens

Is anyone else's course going through a patch of particularly poor greens?

Ours were good up til about 10 days ago and have since been extremely slow and shaggy. Headfort on Saturday also had pretty rough greens compared to their usual high standard.

Is this a general thing because of temperatures or something?

You know Sheet I was just saying to my mate that I felt ours, Dunmurry, were being left long also, as if in preparation for something, like bad weather, heat???? They usually run very well this time of year but seem to be kept that 3 or 4 mill longer than usually? They still run decent but not as true as they usually do and definitely not as fast as previous years

my place (donabate) greens are absolutely top class at the moment, so quick and so true, delighted to have them back after a bad 2 years. Course is in good nick all over at the moment. great value for visitors to be had too, 15e after 6pm, 25e before 10am

Played Knightsbrook at the weekend and they were absolutely first class - quick and smooth. Only complaint was that they were very hard and could've done with a watering.

Elmgreen are struggling with a nasty disease at the moment. Like putting on a teenager's face.

Ours up in carton are lovely at the moment.... Pretty quick but a lovely roll..

Was talking to my pro last night and he was saying that the likes of Headfort etc have a lot of grain in them and really do take a lot of getting use to when normally playing on smooth greens...

I think that the new sand based greens built in Ireland are more a risk to scorching, so to help protect them they cut them a little longer in this weather, after all they are designed to be dry during our 51 week rainy season.

I was there on Sunday Graeme and while you could get some stop. Only making small indents from shots in.

Could have done with a drop of uisce

Yeh, we were there Sunday also. Found myself out the back on so many holes it was unreal. Don't think i made a pitch mark all day!!

I played Swords open on Saturday and I can honestly say they are amongst some of the best greens I`ve ever played. Rolling very fast and true. Hard to believe it`s a pay and play course. Also played Turvey on Monday and the greens there, whilst a little on the slow side, were quite good.

Played Corballis on Tuesday. Weather fantastic and greens looking well considering the heat, but very fast.

Again agree with other posters regarding pitch marks. I always try and repair at least one or look for one while I'm waiting to putt even though I make a pitch mark about once a year.

Maybe the courses should give out pitch repairers when you get your card so as to remind people to look after our courses. I know some people who I've never seen using them, shown how to use them or even worse still don't carry one. We can't keep complaining regarding greens if we don't look after them ourselves. Rant over ;)

Skerries greens are in great condition.

However I was "shocked" at the amount of unrepaired pitch-marks. I repaired at least 3 on every green. I don't remember anything as bad on my ex-home course in N.I.

Hollywood Lakes greens top class at present. Fast & true.
My pal from Black Bush played an Open with me at the weekend and couldn't handle them :D

Yep, Turvey are just a tad slow at the moment compared to normal, but the greens are superb, there is a great promotion on at the moment on green fees, its only €15 during the week and €20 at the weekend, its worth a visit

Forrest Little's greens are the best I have seen them for a very long time besides captains weekend. Fast and true.

Played at the Macreddin couple of days ago, greens were slick as a snooker table. Very well maintained!!
Agree with SOS33, pitchmarks are driving me up the wall!! Why why why why wont they fix the pitchmark, it only takes 20seconds to fix it!

as has been mentioned on the Blarney thread. The greens there are very slow of late. I hope it will improve. They sanded them again about two weeks ago.

Played Carlow last week in their open and found the greens there superb - quick and true and consistent in terms of speed.
Have noticed varying speeds around a few clubs of late - probably weather/ ongoing work related...
