Well the brother might be interested in buying mine and Iwouldnt mind 'upgrading' but dya know what I dont think there's ANY serious 'replacement'.The N120 is the identical (except for bigger/better trackpad?)replacement and its 100 euro dearer -just not worth it !The N310 is the funky/ curvy / 'dimpled' replacement and its almost as dear....ASUS S101 is dearer still and the lovely N10J with 9300 graphics card is 600+++
Does the ASUS EEE 1000HE have anything going for it other than a cpu speed increase from 1.6 to 1.66GHz!!!???NC20 maybe?
I suppose this will keep the resale value high...I dont think they have dropped below 300 much yet if at all...

Well microsoft have limited what a netbook is (I think it's 10" screen or less, 1GB ram or less and 160GB hard drive or less). If a netbook exceeds those specs microsoft won't allow you to put xp on it. So the nc10 is the best specced "netbook" you can get. Also intel really need to start releasing more cpus and amd need to start getting some netbook cpus out the door before we start to see any difference in the netbook market.

The thing is, that most netbooks will be stuck with that little atom 1.6/1.66 (not much of a difference!) processor, so if you're looking for something "superior" you're going to be looking at things like the ergonomics of the machine; trackpad, keyboard, size, weight etc. So unless you go up to the 500/600+ range you're really not getting much of a performance upgrade. Tbh, i'd be waiting another while yet, the Nvidia Ion systems are starting to filter out at the minute, and i'd say they're the next big step for the netbooks.

The battery life seems to vary a fair bit.

In the Nc10 you can put an extra gig of ram in it...
Pretty sure you can't do that with nearly every other netbook.
How does that sound for an upgrade?
Also the new range of NC10's have built in hsdpa modems in them...
    if you'd use it

I already have the extra gig of ram in mine -wife doesnt -To be honest makes little difference except MAYBE if running lots of apps at once or light gaming .SuperPi 1M time is reduced from say 90 secs to 88 if yer lucky!

Disable the page file- and you really will notice the difference the extra gig of RAM makes.

I'm holding out to see what the even more portable smartbooks using
the ARM chips will offer. If I can get a device between the size of my
phone and the NC10 that will offer decent email and web browsing
    I'll be happy.

Samsung N110 is the direct replacement for the NC10.

I went for and am very pleased with the Asus 1000he (added extra gig of memory)

There are solutions out there in this category already- look at the SE XPeria- lovely phone (once they ironed out the crabby software and custom implementation of Windows CE 6.1). Opera is lovely- you've a full keyboard, every possible communication method is catered for, and its a solid aluminium housing. Battery life is several days (if you use the power settings properly- and power down rather than lock the system after x amount of inactivity).

The original Asus 701 was a 7" screen- the phone above is a 4.1" screen- but netbooks moved away from the smaller 7" screens- because they were simply too small to be useful. Expecting something between a 4" and a 7" is probably not going to happen tbh- there isn't a market there.

Aesthetically the Asus 1008HA is a step up. Great keyboard and trackpad, and naturally, standard netbook specs otherwise.

    No replaceable battery though?
