Why dont sky news sports bulletins have GAA results on it?
It claims to be Sky News UK & Ireland?
Let us petition them to include even a token few big results

    It does?

As fair as I know, it does try to target Irish audiences, but not at the expense of British viewers. For instance, you'll sometimes see highlights of Irish international soccer matches, because the Brits would still be interested in watching it.

But I'm sure if Brits flicked onto Sky and saw a report regarding two teams they've never heard of playing a sport they know nothing about, chances are they'll be changing the channel.

You shouldn't be watching that "news" station anyway. It's basically the Sun TV station.

Sure you hear the same from people in Wales and Scotland about sports that are not shown on sports results.

Has anyone ever seen a Gaelic Football or Hurling Result, or highlights on Sky News? maybe I have missed something?

Yes you have its a very basic concept called supply and demand and also demographics, same reason as you wont see any shinty results on Sky News

The only times Sky News have even mentioned the GAA was the day of the Rule 42 vote all those years ago, and then in the lead up to the England rugby match in 2007. Again, since its to do with with Irish soccer and rugby, it's something UKers would have been interested to watch about.

Don't encourage them. I enjoy my sky free life (love my sky+ though). If they started providing coverage, I might someday have to pay to find out or see something

    Which is it?:p

Different situation. Shinty, relatively speaking, isn't very popular.

OTOH, London play in GAA, there are thousands of Irish ex-pats in the UK, and all in something like 10 million have Irish ancestors. And then you have all the Irish customers living in Ireland.

Showing results on UK TV might even increase interest and particiption in the UK.

DO RTE show the cricket results? (genuine question)

How do you know it isn't popular?

BBC Scotland provide coverage of three shinty matches annually on BBC 2

Let's just say hurling attracts bigger crowds. I know - I've been. Still a great game though

They do, but it's not really comparable. Sky News is both UK and Ireland, RTE is Ireland only.

Relatively speaking. For example the national broadcaster shows 3 games a year. In Ireland the national broadcaster could show as many as 3 hurling games in one day.

    Different discussion.

they do provide results on sky text under the irish results in the football section.

but to be fair who really cares about the results from bogball and stickfighting.

Sky do not have an obligation to increase the profile of the GAA in Britain. It's their job to to garner as many viewers as possible, something they won't be doing by showing GAA highlights.

Am I missing something here. When have Sky News ever ever claimed to be Sky News UK and Ireland?? Sure they attempted to set up sky news Ireland and that failed miserably but as far as I know the main channel has never claimed to be UK and Ireland. Sky news is broadcast in countless countries all over the world but at the end of the day their Corporate Name is BSKYB - BRITISH Sky Broadcasting. The Irish viewships must only ever make up 2% or 3% of total sky viewers so why in Gods name would they cover Gaelic Games to the world when 98% of the viewers would not have a clue what is going on.

Absolutly no offence intended but expecting Sky News to cover GAA and wanting to petition them is crazy. Suppose people will want to petition CNN and Fox news to cover GAA next seeming as they broadcast into Ireland on Digital!

True, but this discussion is about results, not highlights.

I think showing results is entirely reasonable, especially as they have an Ireland-only stream on which they show ads for Meteor and so on.

But, then again, I don't run a successful TV station, never mind an empire. Something which the guys at Sky do, so I presume they know best.

As far I know the 'Ireland-only' stream is just for advertisements, they don't have any country specific programming so everyone sees the same thing.

Sky News has to be the worst news channel. I will never forget the day they had the Breaking News story about Prince Harry calling his mate Sooty or something - this was the main story.

Regards their sports coverage - they normally just have whatever Sky Sports are showing as their main sports headlines regardless of what other sports are on.

R.T.E Radio 1 every day on the sports bulletin on News at 1. Also on the Pat Kenny Show sports bulletin.
But we must remember a lot of people in Cricket have a lot of clout. Mind you its a working mans game outside D.4 and popular.

Sky as described is tabloid channel. Junk 24-7 365. All the awards they win as news channel of the year are sponsored by their owner!! In my opinion R.T.E news is way better. Also see the B.B.C never show Irish weather? That really annoys me.

But there is merit is getting on to them to show results especially on the news which is listed as Sky news Ireland. They get enough money off Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 743 ✭✭✭garbanzo

Eh . . . because SKY is a British channel and not an Irish channel and irish sports don't feature on their radar. They don't cover French or Belgian soccer either as they are also not British sports.
This stuff galls me. People just don't get it. Best example was the Special Olympics coverage a few years back in Croke Pk. It didn't even merit a second on SKY. I really hated the tabloidisation that SKY Ireland was. Delighted the day it folded.

The British don't care about GAA. Simple as that.

Beyond that, can't the soccer trolls stay quarantined in their own malfuctioning forum please?

Orizio, I Agree 100%. The championship is on lads and lassies. Can ya feel the passion
Thank god we wont hear racist chants or have to be segrated, we will sit beside each other (in our own stadia) argue and slag have the crack and make our way home. then get on to Boards and give a account of what happened and we can all do it in the G.A.A forum, No need for silly petty rules here.

If I knew what buttons to press I would multi quote and end up banned. Enought to say they cater for an audience of people with with with with with with not a lot of kop on very limited intelect.

They show sports from other countries if ya have anything resembling an English name.........................

Do any of ya really think they could get it right anyway? And while I said earlier maybe we should all lash them anyway but on second thoughts they have ruined soccer (kick and Kiss), Ruining Rugby so let them be.

They've ruined football and rugby? Seriously? Football has never been bigger than it is now, and rugby is basically out of the stratosphere now compared to what it was even 10 years ago.

Re segregation and racism - I think segregation at sports is brilliant and it adds to the atmosphere when all your fellow fans are at the one end, shouting and singing in unison. Some GAA matches can be very anaemic for the fan because the lack of segragation makes it difficult to coordinate support.

Racism - this is a hugely complicated issue, and if the GAA sports had taken off in Eastern Europe then who is to say the GAA wouldn't have the same issues that soccer does? Racism it not just a soccer issue, it just happens that the international nature of soccer (which GAA obviously doesn't have) allows it to used by people to express their ideas about nationhood, race and identity.

You do realise that Sky News Ireland is kaput about 3 years now.

I'm sure he is talking about the etiquette of the games being broken down, rather then their popularity. Segregation is a sign of the often nasty, low brow atmosphere that we see in many soccer games in general, along with things like diving, abuse etc, things that are worse in soccer then in any other sport, or at least GAA and Rugby.

Beyond that, I can see this thread turning into yet another GAA/soccer pointless conflict.

    As can I.

If somebody wants to talk about Sky's sports output, there are other forums available on this site.

    Locked.
