Prequels & Sequels

I think we need a thread where we can dump news about rumoured / planned / in-production prequels and sequels. Some recent news:

The Scott brothers (Tony and Ridley) are reportedly planning an Alien prequel:
(Tony) Scott confirmed that he and his brother Ridley's production company Scott-Free Productions is indeed producing a remake with director Carl Rinsch directing. However the good news is that the film isn't a reboot but rather a prequel to Ridley Scott's original 1979 horror classic. Thus the Ripley character or any of the crew of the Nostromo are very unlikely to be involved. The film could also answer key questions such as the origins of the race, what caused the alien transport ship to crash on LV-426 and so forth.
    Anchorman 2. Will Ferrell says:
'[T]he legacy of that movie just kept building and building and we just got excited about it... I agree that sequels are hard. I think we would use that as a challenge, to try to make it the craziest sequel you’ve ever seen, with a live by the sword, die by the sword kind of feel.'

Samuel L Jackson and Renny Harlin are keen on a sequel to The Long Kiss Goodnight: Harlin says that it might focus on Caitlin, the daughter of Samantha (Geena Davis), and skills she picked up from her mother. Jackson says:
We sort of have a development project now for The Long Kiss Goodnight 2. We’re talking to writers, you know, getting it together… Mitch is one of my favorite characters.

Finally, and scarily: Winona Ryder has let slip that there are solid plans for a sequel to Heathers:
There is a story, and Christian [Slater] has agreed to come back as a kind of Obi-Wan character.
If you haven't seen the original, a) you should, b)
Christian Slater's character goes out with a bang - literally.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Sad state of affairs is that the only rumour of interest to me there is Long Kiss Goodnight. The original is the last time Renny Harlin fired on all cylinders and as Snakes On A Plane has proven, Sam Jackson can elevate even the worst script above being completely pointless...barely!

Looks like there's going to be a sequel to Wall Street, with a theme related to the current financial crisis, to be directed by Oliver Stone. Probable stars: Javier Bardem, Shia leBeouf, and Michael Douglas as an older Gordon Gekko:
From the sound of things, it bears a faint resemblance to Terminator 2: Judgment Day, with the villainous Gekko turned into a protector of sorts. Released after a long prison sentence in June 2008, he tries to warn Wall Street that "the end is coming".

    1) Predators has a release date of July 7 2010, and will be directed by Robert Rodriguez. Funnily enough, there as was an article released today claiming Arnie had been approached to be involved in the film.
"They've written a role for him. Rodriguez is as against the idea of a straight-up remake as much as anyone – which is why they're considering this an official sequel to John McTiernan's film.

    http://www.worstpreviews.com/headline.php?id=13745

I doubt that they'll be able to pull this off, and I wouldn't be surprised if this article is just a symptom of a certain other film out right now. As for the idea itself, I think that it is at least positive that Rodriguez is directing.

    2) The Crow is set for a reboot under the helm of Stephen Norrignton, director of Blade and The League of Extroardinary Gentlemen.
“Whereas Proyas’ original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style,” Norrington told Daily Variety.

I don't know if The Crow is combatible with reality as the whole premise is thoroughingly rooted in the fantastical.

    3) A prequel to Bram Stoker's Dracula is also in the works, to be directed by Alex Proyas.
Proyas complimented the "fresh take on the legend" and said the project manages to play off the horror and the sympathy you have for a character that "sells his soul to the Devil to save his kingdom and family."

Sounds good, but awfully similar to a documentary I saw a few years back.

I'd worry about the Dracula prequel. Van Helsing was originally to be a sequel and we all saw how that turned out.

I think the Alien prequel could be good if they keep the atmosphere of the original.

I think so, but I havent' heard anything about it in a while.

I made a thread a while ago when I signed up to IMDB pro and listed a load of upcoming films. Oddly enough, most of them were remakes and sequels/prequels.

Tonight I'm watching Sin City, and I'm sure we were talking about a sequel back in 2006. According to IMDB, Sin City 2 and Sin City 3 are "in development" for 2011 release. According to Robert Rodriguez, recently, at least one of them looks like it's happening, perhaps filming next year:
"I actually had a phone call with some of the players in it today, but I was on a plane so I missed it," he said. "So next week we're going to talk about it some more and get a timing on when we'd be doing it. But there's a lot of people who are interested in it. ... We are definitely going to do that one.
However, he was saying "next year" last year, so I'll believe this when I see it ...

Good news, everyone! There might be a remake of Saturday Night Fever! To be produced by Simon Cowell! Starring Zac Efron, with music by Timbaland! Read it and Bleep!
Cowell has apparently been locked in negotiations for several weeks with Robert Stigwood, who owns the rights to the screenplay. A source told the Sun: "Simon has been looking into buying the rights for years and opened discussions with Robert about the remake.

"The charm offensive has been in full swing and they made a breakthrough over the last couple of weeks."
