Has anyone any experience a with renting a car abroad, but having a license that is less than 1 year old? I'm asking because I've just got my license, but every company I have come across require it to be held for over a year.

It also depends on your age too.. I had my licence 11 months when I was trying to rent in the UK, and couldn't find anywhere the only way I was able to drive I got my gf who had hers for a year and I went named driver..
I suppose the way you could say that you don't have it a year is to say you lost it and its your replacement...

It depends where you want to go...The year I got my licence (in July), I flew out to the USA (that September), and I had absolutely no problems renting a car. Canada had a similar policy. Most (if not all) places in the UK require you to have a full licence for either 1 or 2 years. When I picked up a car in New Zealand, they just had a requirement that I had a full licence; they didn't car how long it was for...I've never tried to rent a car in mainland Europe, so can't comment on that.

Where are you trying to go?

I have this problem as well as I only have my license 6 months. In Ireland Enterprise are the only company I could find that will rent to you the day after you pass your test. AFAIK they won't do so if you are under 25 though.

regarding other countries, I emailed a good few in Iceland last week and managed to find one that will rent to me so it is possible.

My advice OP is to google it and pick out 10-15 rental companies from the 2/3/4th pages of the search results and send them a mass email. It seems that the smaller the company the more likely there is a chance they may rent to a new driver. There's no way the big boys like Hertz, Avis etc will rent to you but if you can find a small local company you might have a chance.

It's actually Sardinia. Tried what you said RATM, no luck though.

Yeah it might be a bit trickier on a small island than the mainland. If you have already booked a hotel there then maybe try emailing the concierge or reception and see do they know of someone local. The firm you are after may not even have much of a web presence.
A long shot I know, but still worth a shot nonetheless.
