Rubbish Engagement Ring in Antwerp

    Hi All,

We brought our ring in Antwerp six months ago, We had it valued when we returned to Ireland and it apparently worth double the cost. We brought using visa and insured it against our house policy.

Recently a small diamond fell out of the claw - .1 ct I was upset as I rarely wear the ring and I never wear it while doing chores etc...

I brought it into the jeweler in Dublin and he told me that it wouldn't touch the ring, that the diamonds had been set using tension and when he (from the shop we brought it) sized the ring down they loosened the settings. I brought it to 3 or 4 Jewelers before the last one told me to claim it on my insurance either using Visa or the house insurance and if that failed he would reset the ring from scratch. He showed me the ring under the magnifrying glass and lots of the diamonds are about to go - in fact I'm not sure how they are hanging in.

Does anyone know if I'm covered for this sort of thing? I tried ringing the shop once or twice but no answer.

We thought we'd gotten a great deal in Antwerp but I wouldn't buy there again.

    Thanks,
    Nicky:confused:

    And then what?

What if he refuses to replace it or offers to fix it (even though all the Dublin Jewelers said that was only a temp fix)

He is obviously a crook - the jewelers we visited since all said that a ring like ours should never have been size down never mind several sizes.

tell him what you've told us, and refuse to leave his shop till it's fixed.

don't get someone else to repair it, as then he'll claim you voided whatever warranty there was.

    We went to this place

A shop called Brilliance in Antwerp Central Station

It might be a case of you get what you pay for.

But, no harm in going back to them, and getting them to repair/replace the ring. Your first point of call should be back to where you bought it from.

Really sorry to hear about that. We went to harold Phillipe in Antwerp but only after reading enough positive reviews on the net. We were advised to keep away from the ones near the station. I know you should have coverage by visa but I guess it depends on what the grounds you are claiming for are.. Best of luck with it

Thanks - in hindsight we should have stuck to the big shops - I just loved this ring.

If I got what I'd paid for I would gotten a ring that lasted more than 5 months!

Thanks for telling your story OP. Makes sense to buy local for after sales purposes, without having to jump in a plane.
We bought our engagement ring in Dublin and are delighted with it: price, size, quality, personal touch, local jeweler...

Sorry to hear you got all this trouble with your ring. Hope you can get it sorted.

Same here, and it was quite reasonable at less than 1500, also I often get people commenting on it, at checkouts etc, and you usually wouldnt expect that fr a ring less than 1500!

Hi, I don't know anything about claiming for the ring. But there is a shop on Middle Abbey Street, that will reset all of your diamonds. I've seen their work many times and they are fantastic. My friend was left an 80 year old ring in a will, but it was falling apart. She brought it into Osbournes and they first drew a picture of the ring as it was. Then they removed all the stones, cleaned and pollished them. They then remaid the entire ring. It was stunning! Nicest ring I've ever seen. They're quite reasonable too. This was a few years ago so I'm not sure if they are still there or not but they were above the cafe, next to the supermacs.
But I really hope you either get it fixed for free or can claim for it! You poor thing! Good luck.
