    Hi all,

I've been reading some of the older threads with advice and tips on the Garden Route from Capetown to Port Elizabeth. We're off in July and we're going to drive that route over a few weeks.

Has anyone any tips or help/ideas that you think are worth knowing before we head off?

We're going from Capetown to Hermanus and on to Standford, Knysa, Plettenberg, then onto Gorah Elephant Park (Addo) and Shamwari and on to Port Elizabeth.

Heya. Drove from Cape Town to Oudtshoorn (outside George) in one day in March and it was a 12 hour drive alone!Saying that the roads are excellent and easy to drive. Also handy that its the same side of the road as here. Everything is perfectly signposted but we didn't go any farther. If you have the time it looks like a fab journey!

Hey, let me know how you get on. I'm currently planning a similar trip albeit in November or December. Not sure on the feasibility but I'm thinking of driving Cape Town - Port Elizabeth - Cape Town. Alot of driving I know but plan to try and break it up as much as possible and try to set out early most days.

We're flying back to Capetown from Port Elizabeth so we'll avoid the drive back before flying on to London.

Shamwari is the far side of of Port Elizabeth by about 50 or so miles. If you plan to visit the wine district, you could base yourself there for a night. Stops in Hermanus and Kynsna/Plettenberg will break up the journey well but you'll still have at least four hours onto PE from there.

Driving wise we had no problems at all, everywhere is well signposted and the roads are good and relatively traffic free. Get a GPS system if you can when renting the car as it saves looking at maps.

Sounds to me that you have a pretty good plan. We did a pretty similar trip and it was very good. It is a long spin. We went through the mountains i.e. not the main road for a portion which was well worth it. The roads were still very good.
Hermanus is lovely. Try to go whale watching.

The main advice is to relax and enjoy the trip, stop along the way and take lots of photos.
