There are loads - look here for a full list of certified races. Dublin in Oct may be your best bet though, about 20 weeks away which is bang on for a training program.

your location says donegal, however if it were dublin i would say typical.

There is always a broken beer glass somewhere, bound to give a cyclist a headache.

    Uh-Oh .

Actually while your talking about cycling i have a curious question.

Do cyclists on long distances not get extremely sore backs from being hunched over the handlebars for something like 6 hours at a time without sitting up?

    .

yeah i was on the bike for 5 hours recently and my back was sore,my neck, and my arse, i only started last year and at the start i was thinking oohh i am sore etc etc. now i am fitter and better on the bike and i just try to take the pain and get on with it.

also you try change your position on the bike all the time, so that can help your back a bit

Ouch .. so it does hurt after all, but hey if you like something the pain will be the least of your worries if its what your brain wants to do the body can take it.

ALL marathons are 26.2 miles. There are a couple of half marathons, including a very good one in Longford in August as well.

If - as I'm guessing from your posts - you actually want a shorter race then they aren't marathons - only the 26.2 marathon and 13.1 mile half marathon have names as such. Everything else is just called by the distance - 5km, 5 mile, 10km and 10 mile being the most popular. Check here for a pretty full list of events.

The womens "mini"-marathons tend to be more focussed on fun and fundraising rather than running (unless you're an elite). As the bulk are not certified they frequently are poorly measured and have very congested routes and a majority of walkers. They do a huge amount of good in raising funds and getting women who may be put off by a "serious" running race out and active but they don't take themselves at all seriously as running events and so wouldn't be the best for someone who wants a good race. And while I can see the justification for a womens "mini" marathon the idea of a mens one is ridiculous and the organisers have a clear case of bandwagon envy!

Thanks alot Mod.. i will look into a shorter one than the 26.2 one , i think i would have to undertake a few shorter ones before i would have the endurance for the 26 miles.

Appreciate the link Amadeus , thanks alot for the info.

If you check out the Dublin Marathon website you will find a series of runs 5 mile, 10 mile and half marathon in the lead up to the marathon that would have you ready in time. Don't let the idea of 26.2 intimidate you, believe me unless you have some condition that would prevent you from running long distance anybody can finish a marathon.

I agree with that, unless you have a medical condition then a marathon is achievable for pretty much anyone, with the right prep and lead time.

As you know better than me its only when people start aiming for very specific times that the real difficulty enters the arena:)

I'll try the 5 one and if i think i can keep it up i'll go for a longer one .. i have the right mental attitude in that i never give up with regards to fitness, just get my diet plan in order and my body will sing the same tune as my diet.

That's the way to go with it, its an ideal race series to get people ready for the Marathon. Check out the athletics/running/triathlon forum, you will get lots of help and advise there. Also there is always lots of people aiming for their first marathon posting there.

You right with the mental side of things, with long distance running that is where the battle is won or lost. Best of luck with it.

Much appreciated for all the help Odysseus ..I will definitely check it out.

Will you be taking part in any of the events yourself?

No probs, I remember my first endurance event and the associated anxiety;) I would like to do the Marathon, I'm not living in Dublin anymore but consider it my home marathon.

I will have to wait and see I had a major event in march/april this year and I'm trying to get time to train for the Connemara 100 miler in August so if that goes ok and I can still move I would hope to be at the start line in October

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,249 ✭✭✭DubMedic

Dublin is not really suited imho for training for such an endurance event as the Connemara 100 because of the amount of pollution in this city, one would find it hard to train for a 100 mile marathon with all the pollution and health hazards we have here.

Congratulations i must say for having the guts to even think about an event like that but i suppose it is all in the head and as long as you have the mental set it shouldnt be too hard prepping the body.

Ah , so i might have an advantage if your tired in october then , just might beat ya ;)

    I wish!.

The is a good chance you could. I'm bulit for distance not speed as well as smoking about 20 gitanes a day. I have only done one race as a non-smoker ans it was my slowest.

The guy who won Coke yesterday; it was his first marathon. My fastest marathon was 3.40 so ther is actually a good chance that you may. As I said eariler check out the A/R/T forum. You will better advise than I can give you. There are a good few people there who have run longer distances and faster than me there.

Odysseus tbh probably the only advantage i have over you at the moment is the fact i don't smoke;).

    Hi there,
the best place to have a look to see what races are coming up are on the following websites, these guys work pretty hard to try and get a good list of whats happening around the country

    www.runireland.com
    www.activeeurope.com

Is there ant area in particular you are looking for a race in?

There is a new race starting this year in Dingle, kerry, they are holding both a half and full Marathon in September

Don't let him fool you - earlier this year he ran the Marathon de Sable. From thier website:
Why this IS the toughest footrace on Earth
It covers 243km/151 miles (in sections similar to 25, 34, 38, 82, 42, 22 km) run over 6 days (7 for some) - equivalent to 5 1/2 regular marathons. That's a speed of between 3 and 14 km an hour for competitors aged between 16 and 78). In addition to that, competitors have to carry everything they will need for the duration (apart from a tent) on their backs in a rucksack (food, clothes, medical kit, sleeping bag etc). Water is rationed and handed out at each checkpoint.
