Sky phoneline/install questions

I've bitten the bullet and have decided to rid myself of the 20th century technology provided by UPC and I've ordered Sky HD with multiroom. In one of the bedrooms where this will be installed, the phone socket is broken. This happened a very long time ago and I think it was one the cats that ripped the cables or some such. It's fixable I'm sure.

Will the Sky installer expect a working socket that he just plugs an RJ11 into or will he wire into the socket (like eircom phonewatch), in which case the current state of it probably won't matter?

If that doesn't work, I have a DECT cordless phone extension. Will the Sky box work with it?

You don't actually need a phoneline to have sky installed. It's only a scam from sky to tempt you to use pay-per-view or the gaming features. The engineer will run a cable from the digibox to your phone but if you tell him that you're waiting on Eircom to move your phoneline he won't connect it.

The op is getting multiroom so i'm pretty sure both boxes will need to be connected to a phoneline, Well thats the way it was when i was an installer maybe it changed these days.

Yes, for multiroom you have no choice.

Phoneline is definitely required for multiroom so sky can check that you havent given the box to your neighbour of something.

They're unreal. I just ordered Sky online for a family member - you'll see they are waiving the "manual enablement charge" of €37.50 until June 22nd.

Then they ring and say there's a problem with the payment processing on the website - they need to get the payment details. Fine I thought. Then they say they have to charge the €37.50 for the manual install. I explain it's shown as a free item on the website and shown as €0 on my summary from the website, but they say they need to include it. Literally "computer says naahhhhh" stuff. I told them I'm not paying it, simple as that as I have ordered off the website, and got confirmation of the costs. They are to get back to me. Brutal customer service.

If cost isn't an issue, Sky is a better product, although I honestly think UPC have overtaken them in customer service - seriously. Your Sky multiroom is dearer than UPC, plus you now have to have a separate phone line to support it.

In relation to the phone line - not required for one box, definitely required for multiroom.

Everything is cheaper with Sky, including multiroom, by the way.

    For new customers.

Setanta cheaper on UPC. Multiroom cheaper on UPC for existing customers.

For many, Sky is not cheaper when you are paying for a separate phone line and separate broadband.

This is not the thread to discuss pricing, as I'm sure that has been done to death already, but for me Sky is cheaper and better. And I guess that's what matters.

Fair enough. Don't know how it can be cheaper when you have a separate phone line you are paying for as well though, and separate broadband also I guess.

As for the phone line connection, read though this:
    https://skyireland.sky.com/roi/site/subscription_tsandcs

and especially this (rather than relying on incorrect information on here):
If you have taken up the free Sky box and minidish offer, Sky Multiroom subscription(s), Sky+ and/or Sky HD, then as part of the installation we must connect your Box to a working telephone line. If an appropriate socket is not available or the Box cannot be connected to such a socket for any other reason, we will not be able to deliver or install your Digital Satellite Equipment. Instead, we will arrange a later installation date once you tell us that the appropriate telephone socket has been installed. In connecting the Box to the socket, we will use the nearest available socket and any cabling will be clipped to the relevant skirting.

Probably because I live in one of the many areas where UPC has been promising broadband since 1999 but hasn't delivered it.

+1 for the above. I ordered (or tried to order online should I say) Sky+ for someone that I look after. Website offered to waive the €37.50 but there was a problem handling the order so I had to do it over the phone. I was promised the same waiver by the operator but they said I had to pay the full amount first and then the €37.50 would be refunded to my card at a later date. Five weeks later and no refund. Phoned them today and they don't seem to have a clue what is going on. I'm waiting for a "product specialist" to call me back. I have requested that they trace the initial phonecall where I was promised the offer in the first place, so, let's wait and see if they even get back to me!

Apologies that I went off topic a bit but it will probably be relevant to some others too.

Just had Sky+HD installled without a phoneline, engineer didn't ask and either told the Sky agent i didn't have landline. Didn't get charged the €37.50 either. Happy days!

If you're getting HD AND Sky+ you do need a landline.

For multiple box installs you need as land line. There is no way what so ever around it AT THE MOMENT and Sky penalise customers AND the agent/installer if they find multiroom in a house with no land line.

For single installs - no land line need ( as above )

Just a note to that - if a customer has no land line Sky will allow a household to have two contracts run side by side. Some of you will reply "of course they will, double bills!!" Some may be happy to know this.
