TOYOTA HILUX CONSUMPTION

I had my Hilux serviced (major with new timing bely) a few months ago. Since then my consumption has gone from 28-29mpg to about 25mpg. Ihave taken it back to the garage for them to sort out, but they say that the consumption would not be affected by what they did, and it needs to be checked with a computer (which they don't have). Does anyone have any advice, or any thoughts on why my consumption would have changed that much.

What are you using to measure your MPG??

    Trip computer??
    On a fill ?
    On €50 of fuel?

I measured consumption by filling tank vs milage travelled.

it shouldn't be the plugs as its just been serviced?

Sorry, it's diesel so no plugs. Never bothered to look at what the vehicle was

Measuring consumption this way must be difficult to get a proper reading - depends on a lot of things, not just how far you traveled

Why would it have changed so suddenly though, I thought that they may have not got the new timing belt alligned properly, but they said that the timing belt doesn't connect to the camshaft and therefore wouldn't affect the consumption.

If it went wrong just after the service , they made a mess of something.

Since the belt was replaced too , it kinda points at that as it'd be the most likely thing to make it use more juice suddenly.

If the belt only drives the diesel pump , they made a mistake adjusting it ( most pumps are "tweakable" a few degrees)

They might have used a poor quality replacement airfilter , effect might be slight , but noticeable.

Depends on so many things, tyre pressure, loaded or not, windows open or closed, urban driving or on the moterway, heater or air con on or off, the list is huge and I cant see how a service would make it any worse. Are you sure its not leaking out anywhere

Thanks, that's what I thought. I think I need to take it to someone else to sort out, does anyone know of a decent mechanic in South Dublin, who may be able to help.
