    Hello,

Can anyone recommend me a web company. Im currently thinking about starting up an online business. Not the usual shop and cart type of thing but a type of advert based business(site would have to be fully automatic eg they pay and their advert gets placed on the site within a couple of minutes. Would be looking for reasonable rates and all the better if its a Irish company.

    Thanks!

The type of website you're describing sounds to me like a "directory" site. My suggestion is that you ask your friends/family/colleagues for word of mouth recommendations.

You may get recommendations from some folks here, most genuine and some not so. Web companies themselves cannot advertise directly (it's against boards.ie rules in order to avoid spam and for revenue reasons).

As Trojan said sounds like a directory or portal site you are looking towards. If so check out edirectory.com However whilst nobody wants to spend much on their site/idea to get it set up exactly as you require will take a bit of time and time=money. I would research for similar type sites and then when you know exactly what you require get quotes from various web design companies. Cheapest is not always the best of course!

Put the term ecommerce website into google.ie and you will get a list of companies doing this kind of work (i.e. websites which are more than a brochure). Get a price off a few. Then ask some people who are in the industry for a sanity check on price.

Maybe insist that the site is php/rails and something like mysql, basically software with no licensing costs.

PS Ask them about what kind of graphic designers they have working for them. Some ecommerce companies are weak on this but dont accept that

Seriously doubt that a directory site will be able to earn revenue. Indo group trying it again with yourlocal.ie. They have serious selling power and serious promotion opportunities. You need lots of money to compete. Beware.

    Have to say I agree..
The only reason I am a member of a directory is to improve web optimisation. Wouldn't be too pushed with non branded directories either. Best of luck though!

Its not a directory as such, its focusing on one thing in particular.

Various businesses registering and paying to put an ad on the site even if it is only on one specific topic area is still a directory. The only difference being you would only have one category as oppose to a number of them.
