    Hi there,

I'll be imprisonned in a sling for the next 5-6 weeks - are there any excercises you could recommend doing to maintain my strength and fitness over that time?

I was previously active - am a 28 year old female, size 8 and want to stay that way without jeopardising my shoulder healing .... - its bad enough having a crap shoulder with out the rest of my body following suit,

I have a fitball and turbo trainer ... any suggestions would be greatfully received! :pac::D:pac:

hey, sorry to hear about the collar bone!!

If you are just looking to maintain weight then im sure you could go walking as usual.

Personally I wouldnt do much more, let the bone heal and plan your path back to full fitness!

I think any kind of low impact CV would be fine, stationary bike/elliptical etc.

My concern would be the sweat though, casts and sweat can NOT be a good combination.:)

Eat at maintenance, walk as much as possible, take creatine. There's evidence that creatine can help maintain muscle mass in injured athletes.

Whatever you do, let it heal. Clavicle breaks are probably one of the hardest things to get to heal properly because of the nature of the beast but you're best off doing some walking, try to keep the claories down and letting it heal itself fully.

    Thanks everyone.

Part of the problem is that i'm not in a cast, so every movement jolts ... hence why walking is not really an option at least yet. If i could even do seated exercises to keep stomach and legs strong, it'd be something ...

Does anyone know when I can probably start physio on the bad arm? This sitting around is killing me ... :( I'll be avoiding surgery at all costs however.

You will just have to take it handy. Go for walks the weather is lovely and be patient, I broke mine 2 years ago and you just have to give it time

    Front squats :P
Sorry not really. THEY WILL KILL YOU!

Maybe light jogging on a beach if ya could handle it. But most importantly, listen to the pain. If it hurts, stop!

I'd seriously avoid doing anything strenuous.

I'd a broken clavicle and pretty much everything I did gave that 'jolt' feel. You need to avoid stretching your arm/shoulder and, for me, just standing up from a seated position was painful at the beginning due to needing to use your upper body to right yourself.

The only things you could do in my opinion, would be exercises that you don't need any balancing by your upper body.
That's why I think jogging would be a terrible idea because you're constantly shaking your shoulder around when it's trying to knit.

Maybe leg curls/extensions on a bench (or chair) would be a decent bit of exercise while you mend.

Just think of it this way..
You can do as much exercise as you want when you're recovered.
If you try doing anything too strenuous now, you're going to have to live with the aftermath of that injury for the rest of your life.

Best of luck with it though, it's not nice. :)

    Hi again everyone!

I'm into my 5th week of my sling-wearing and am due x-rays on Thurs. Shoulder area feels more 'normal' and slightly stronger. However there is still an overlap of about 1 inch at the break and a very unsightly bump (i'm a girl). Am conscious this is going to affect my posture too.

Given the break is unlikey to have knitted completely, does anyone think that using a figure-8 brace at this stage would make any difference? I mentioned this to 2 doctors and they shrugged off the idea but all treatment of clavicle breaks in europe and usa are treated this way. I was thinking of buying a brace like this online in order to pull my shoulders back to encourage the break into a better position ...or is this an incredibly bad idea??

    Thanks :)

figure 8 prob wont do much for you at this stage as the bone is more than likely healed, the bump is something youll have to live with sorry
