White vans

Hired out a white van today to move some stuff. Interesting experience being on the other side of the steering wheel.

I saw a guy I cycle with on the road. Tried to say "Nice day for a spin", but it came out as "Get the f*** off the road you hippy. Use the crappy cycle lane or else pay road tax!". Then he clipped my wingmirror when I overtook him, and crashed into the side of the van when I immediately turned left without indicating. Bloody cyclists eh?

We hired a white van to transport our bikes to the Caledonian Etape .... Irony?

    And, in contrast...

A friend of mine was driving up the Glenmacnass road on Saturday when she saw two cyclists pushing their bikes up the hill. Now my friend is a fellow adventure racer who is currently putting in loads of road miles on the bike training for the round Ireland race. So, out of concern for the cyclists (they were walking their bikes) she stopped and asked were they OK, and did they need a hand or a spare tube. The pair of eejets responded to this by asking why was she polluting the atmosphere by driving a car when she could be cycling. She duly put them in their place by explaining that she was doing logistical support for this, and they duly fell off the moral high ground and lost their sense of smug superiority. I still can't believe that those eejets responded to an offer of help (from a better cyclist than them) with such a crap attitude. If it was me they'd have been left feeling about an inch tall.

I've had similar experience to that in Lacken about two months ago when I stupidly asked a cyclist if he heeded any assistance as he was standing beside the bike and leaning over it as if he was having a coronary.

I also had a number of encounters with members of this forum on my commute into and out of town. And, I must say it was quite disappointing to see how smug and elitist these average (at best) cyclists can be.
    They must be very insecure.
So much for trying to be friendly and / or helpful.

Sorry 7200, but I have to ask. Tell us all about the smug and elitist behaviour from boardsie cyclists there Peaky?

I too am curious. Haven't encountered a smug-elitist-boardsie on any spins so far,

    examples of elitism:
    ...these average (at best) cyclists...

    and smugness:
    ...They must be very insecure.

Seriously, put the tar and brush back in the shed dude. I have often had cyclists pass by who don't reply to a friendly wave or "hello". I might utter some expletive in my head but it quickly passes and I wouldn't go onto their club website and accuse the entire group of being a bunch of unfriendly louts.

I think people can take things up too easily as perceived slights when they are not intended that way. Happens all to often in the testosterone-fuelled ego-fest that is our "sport."

@Dirk- I think the correct term is "jerbs."

That excess testosterone must have been absorbed from my chamois cream

At the risk of wandering back towards the topic, I'm always suspicious of white vans showing me courtesy on the road, especially when I'm on the bike - I figure they're just lining you up to give themselves a better shot at you!!!

So I've got a bad reputation around here it seems? :( Mine is white with branding on the side, does that still count?

Sorry, must try harder. I often find it difficult to articulate my smugness when gasping up a hill.

Maybe I need a new bike. Perhaps a Storck Fascenario with some "my other bike is a Focus Triple" decals.

    I don't get what you're asking me.

I said don't feed the troll because Chris had come onto boards.ie cycling forum and stated that boards.ie cyclists are smug and elitist. Which couldn't be further from the truth. The Sat cycles and the amount of info given out here being prime examples.

Oh right, the second part of the post was directed at Chris. I really didn't pick that up the first time I read the post - now it makes a lot more sense!

I don't think Chris was trolling by the way, he is a reasonably regular poster, I imagine he was posting his genuinely held opinion. Part one was merely confirming something Enduro posted (and that I can well believe.)

Part two about the Boardsie experience on his commute, who knows as no details were forthcoming. I too would be interested. I reckon either (1) he took some thing(s) as a slight that was not intended that way or (2) he met Raam on his commute. If the former I can only imagine it was some incident involving people in Boards jerseys and he didn't communicate with them, either that or he met Raam.
