Should I feel guilty cancelling something I can't afford?

Right so, not really a major issue of mine. But i still live at home. I pay my way though. And when we want something for the house ourselves we get ourselves instead of getting my mother to pay for something she had no say in.

So anyway, last year we (my brothers, my sister and I) wanted to get sky and we all agreed to share the bill. It was to come out of my account and they were to give me their share.

A year and a half later, its down to just me (cause it comes out of my account).

Brother no.1 doesn't work, doesn't claim the dole either. No money to pay.

Brother no.2 is a proper ass hole, we had a falling out a few months back and he refuses to give me anything. (and yet he can afford to buy cars).

My sister pays up after a week of begging for the payment and sometimes she gets herself into a huff cause the lads doesn't pay. (and she is earning a whole lot more than i am).

Crazy house, tbh. So i am guessing ye are all thinking get the eff out. I had debts and i have been clearing them (i am almost free of them). And i am hoping to save and go back to college for september of 2010.

I get 400 a week, and 68 euro a month for the sky doesn't bother me but for the fact that we all agreed to share the bill does and no one pays up. I rarely ever watch tv. And 70 a month is one thing i can do without and put it towards my savings to go back to college.

Simple really, just cancel the sky, end of story, why should you have to pay it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,195 ✭✭✭✭Michellenman

Cancel the sky. If you don't watch it and the others aren't paying for it then cancel it. If they really want it back then tell them to pay for it out of their own accounts. If they can't afford it or refuse to pay for it then that's their own problem.

get rid of it that teach they all a lesson they soon pay up if they think it be gone good on u for going back to college

Cancel it. If they want it, tell them it's easy to get it back. They just have to ring up SKY with their bank account details.

68 per month = 816 per year. Drop it.

i agree with above, cancel the thing and don't even tell them. Serves them right and all.

I would cancel it but its a shame the sky boxes doesnt come with a lock code cause if it did i would have it on full time until they started paying up, since its in your name and coming out of your bank account you can do what ever you like mate :pac:. hope it helps

Don't feel guilty at all, you're not getting the use out of it and they're taking advantage of you.

Happened in my house, although there was no falling outs as such.We just cancelled it as it was not worth the hassle tbh.

No point you paying for something you dont use.

I'm not sure but do they have a "parental lock" ? Just plays stuff suitable for kids

    Yup cancel it.

You will still get a load of the free stations.
BUT - if you don't also have an aerial - you will lose RTEs and TV3 - but no loss there really.

Before cancelling it though - would suggest you let them all know that after carrying their load for the last while you are now past your limit. Remember tell em - this is not a discussion point. If they want to start paying now - grand - but you need their share of the payment that is overdue & if you are keeping agree on how and when they pay.
Next time it is even 1 day late SKY will be called for the cancellation - no discussion - end of :)

I wouldn't even put it open to discussion. Cancel it. If someone else is desperate for it- let them pay.

FYI- you can get a Freesat box on ebay- it uses the same connection as your Sky box- but is totally free after you buy the box. Get a UK box- rather than Irish Sat-For-Free version. You won't regret it (well, not much anyway!)

    Cancel it! Do it now!!

Well, I finally cancelled it. I will miss some of the channels though. But i couldn't face being used anymore. When i asked my brother, is he going to pay me, he told me to f off. So that was my deciding point.

We had a bit of a falling out a few weeks back, where it was his fault and he has been a real prick towards me since then. He even tore up money he owed me.

I am looking for an outsider's view on this. Am i being taken advantage off and being used or am i being selfish?

Even, a few months back I got a nasty broadband bill. Its meant to be 30euros a month. One month i received the bill for 80euros. Now i don't mind other people using it but 80euros was a bit too much. It was never like that before. Its not when i deciced to take control and take the broadband modem with me, that they all decide to go out and get their own one. They are sharing their own bill between them. So they were happy to let me fork out on that too.

Am I being selfish or being taken advantage off?

You are far from being selfish, you were hardly using the service yourself and paying every bill?
I wouldn't feel one bit bad, especially with your brothers lovely attitude.

    Enjoy your savings! :D

Just curious, how did the broadband come to 80.

did you give them the password?

I didn't have a password on it. Like i said, i didn't mind them using it, until i got the bill. But they were obviously using it far too much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 90 ✭✭silverwater

Well you should mind letting them use it if it's giving them the chance to exploit you.
Stop paying for stuff for everyone, stop using your bank account, stop putting your name on communal items.
    They'll continue to use you.

I would consider getting out of the house too.. but I know that's more extreme.
That would be way too much hassle for me and I would be out of there...

fcuk em. Cut the service. If they want it back, one of them can handle the account.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,441 ✭✭✭Firetrap

Cut the service. I don't see why you should feel guilty - they have not held up their end of the bargain.

Also, don't let them use your Vodafone internet any more. Regular internet use does not bring you over the monthly download cap that most ISPs have. Even Vodafone's paltry 5gb limit. I would not be surprised if they've been illegally downloading music/movies/TV shows, maybe pørn. All on an account that can be traced back to you. I'm not being sensationalist about this either; there's a post in the broadband forum from someone who got a warning letter from UTV internet.

Thanks for that. I figured they must have been downloading. I have often spent an hour on the internet browsing for info that uses up about 2mb. In that bill i got there was a time where 304mb was used at once, while i was in work, which costed over 8 euros. Now i doubt they spent 152 hours browsing for info. As you say regular internet use doesn't bring you over the limit.

yeah this is what i would do. Dont feel guilty. They are not paying you for something they agreed to pay for . Simple as.

Totally playing devils advocate here- but Windows updates on a computer- can be hundreds of Mbs in size (depending in part on when you last downloaded them). Its a bitch when something like that happens (my parents got a EUR200 bill for something similar) I may be totally barking up the wrong tree- but its possible there could be a legitimate answer to it. Mind you- why should you pay for it?

As I decide to check Windows download and find Service Pack 2 for Vista ready to download to my laptop @ 343Mb

Sky have a pin feature which can let you block certain channels and programmes and restrict viewing of recorded items if you have Sky+. Just create one and your laughing - the others will soon get pissed and cough up the money.

family can be so cruel and get away with it  , if this was a shared rented house some one would be getting the boot out the door, and an add put on daft.ie for a new tennent.

No way in hell should you put up with that BS OP. Fair play for making a stand.

This post should be entitled "Should I feel guilty for cancelling something someone else cant afford". You can afford it but you are choosing not to carry others who cant afford it. Make sure you dont tell them before cancellng it. When it is cancelled deny any knowledge of why it was cancelled.

Oh and by the way when you ring sky they will give you some BS about you can have it until the end of the month and ring back then. Its a scam. When you ring back they say oh sorry you missed the cutoff point. Just tell them to cancel it on the spot. You have been warned. They caught me for this once and tried it on again when I cancelled sky movies.

How many people do you need to tell you you're being used? Add another one to the list.
Of course you should cancel all this stuff.

On a side note, someone should print statistics for the number of Irish people that still live with their parents past the age of 18/20. It's bloody scary. Are you and all your siblings STILL living with your parents? Never understood that at all.
