I would say that its on the older system as it is all based on its first registration

But can't all 2008's be taxed under the new system? Also, if pre July I believe you have a choice as to what system you go for

    Not Your Ornery Onager

You should have the option to go with whichever is cheaper. There may be official confusion, as this scenario may not have arisen before, but you should insist on this.

Aye, AFAIK anything registered pre July in 2008 had the choice of going on which ever tax band was cheaper.

Assuming it's a 1.9 TDI, I thought they were in a higher tax bracket than €150?

Edit: www.volkswagen.ie seem to have deleted the Mk5 Tdi and the 1.9 Tdi from the list, so can't really find out the tax bracket.

Its a 2008 car so it can go on the new system defo. What engine/emissions has it got? It may not make it to the 156 bracket. The 1.9TDI is 300 I think.

I misread the original post (didn't see the year properly).
I would presumne that it will come down to which ever rate is cheapest (as per the law).

The car isn't under hire purchase is it, there may be implications there.
