    Ok

since the last few months I have amassed a huge debt and Im frankly ashamed. I am out of work and it seems that sitting idle is leading me to do these things, I told my mom just a while ago and she was a bit gobsmacked. I have pretty much used up all the monies I had earned since the last year.

I must have squandered 2000+ easily since February.

I am even thinking of canceling my bank account as I own another 700+ on my card, would I be sued...?

    really terrible......

Not enough information in the post to try help, what way are you betting? is it online? If so you can get them to bar you by going on their livehelp and asking them to ban you from using their site and stop you from re opening a new account. You do want to stop? It does appear that way if you admitted your concern to your mother, you have taken the first step at least by admitting it. I know how you must be feeling, in a big hole with no way out, but you can do it. You must want to though and it is hard, you need to take yourself out of the enviroment' where you feel this compulsion.

OP you are admitting you have a gambling problem- that is a good first step. You have two immediate problems- the pre-existing debt- and how to ensure that you do not fall into the same situation in future.

I would suggest a few different things.

    1. You cannot ignore or run away from the debt. Contact MABS- they may be able to help you set up a repayment schedule

    2. Cancel that credit card- and transfer the debt to a personal loan. Its easier to structure your repayments- the interest is only due on the o/s balance, and interest rates on personal loans can be as little as 1/4 that of those charged on credit card balances.

    3. Gambling is an addiction- is recognised as such, and there are supports available for those willing to address their addiction. Many programmes are based on the very successful Alcohol Anonymous programmes.

    4. In tandem with the above- you need to identify what it is that is putting you in the situation you are in (if its being stuck at home without anything to do- why not go to the local community centre and offer to volunteer?) It may simply be the case of being proactive about getting yourself out of the current situation that is putting you in the frame of mind that compells you to gamble.
