PSP Go leaked

Someone at Sony in America accidently uploaded the June issue of Qore early, which has a segment on the new iteration of PSP. It was meant to be released after E3.

    Details:
    3.8" Screen
    Bluetooth
    43% lighter than PSP-3000
16GB Internal Flash Memory (expandable via memory stick of course)
No UMD drive, designed for digital downloads

It will not replace the current PSP-3000, it'll be marketed alongside it as a more portable alternative for folks who like digital distribution.

It's a slider design, like the Sony Mylo. No change to controls.

    Some pics:

A youtube rip of the video from Qore:

Also, on the games front, a new Metal Gear Solid for PSP is mentioned (likely what Kojima Productions is teasing about on its site), Gran Turismo is also mentioned, and there's a little snippet of footage from LittleBigPlanet for PSP.

Yeah I read about this a few minutes ago. It looks nice but why the fcuk did they not add another anolog stick.

Because it will alienate every other PSP owner who won't be able to play games requiring the second stick.

    thats cool

Also worth noting that the leaked boxart for Go matches in style earlier leak for the slim PS3.

    http://playstationlifestyle.net/2009/05/30/psp-go-box-pics-look-strikingly-similar-to-ps3-slim-box/

    psp-go-vs-ps3-slim-685x263.jpg

So this might confirm two leaks in one go. Seems like there might be a lot of new Playstation hardware around by the end of the year.

The PSP Go is due in the autumn, by the way.

When people bought the original DS they could upgrade to Lite and now DSi but still play their games. If there's no UMD drive, how are people going to be able to play their games they already own? That's a big kick in the nuts for current owners wanting to upgrade and a big mistake by Sony imo.

Because its a redesign of the original PSP not PSP2 or whatever they are going to call the next generation PSP.

Looks like non-removable battery so end of CFW right there too.

Supposedly there will be some sort of transfer cable like 360 HDD transfer cable to rip your UMDs onto this new PSP Go.

I don't like when you can't change the power source on portable machines, if it dies then there'll be a lot of people who will have to pay to have one fitted instead of just buying a new battery.

I doubt it tbh. The 360 system was for transferring game saves, demos, media & xbox live arcade games (low value items). If you're transferring games that are worth €20-50 then it's a whole different story and unless they've some sort of security in place for it then people will take advantage and load up all their friends' games onto their own PSP. Thus angering the developers and publishing companies.

Its really tiny, the width of the unit is reduced a large amount.

    Better, official shots here.

Dunno how Eurogamer got them, but they did.

Also, regarding what existing owners will do about UMD games.. I think they're more aiming this at new PSP owners. After all, they'd be the ones to help expand the software market, which is what PSP's real problem is. Hardware sales have been good, software, not so much.

But there may be a solution for existing owners to get games onto a Go's memory.

But I wouldn't have expected PSP2 games to play on a PSP1 if you know what I mean.

Would they hack the 3000 already. I want to buy a PSP.

Aside from the looks of the machine (it's not the prettiest...), I don't think I'd be too sold on digital distribution only. If I was planning on getting a PSP, and I've been tempted a few times, I think I'd go for an older model so I could buy actual games and not just download them. There's a lot of deals on UMDs at retail, which I doubt would carry over to the PSN.

In a way, it's my main gripe with digital distribution. If there is only one source for your product, then the provider can charge what they like (to an extent, some market factors still apply), and it becomes very monopolistic. It'd be like buying from only GameStop, or only GAME - sure there's a chance of the odd discount, but why would they if they've no competition?

Hardware sales could be outstanding if people are allowed to upgrade from their own without being inconvenienced of buying digital copies of the games they own on UMD. For their own sake I hope they come up with a solution. It's one of the few consoles I haven't purchased but is on my list of things to pick up soon so I'm going to hold off till all the information is finally released.

Edit: I wonder if it will be a case of downloading the games directly to your PSP or else to your computer using something similar to iTunes so you can choose what you want to have on there.

its seems everyone is negative about the design

personally I think its right good

    i love the sliding feature

This isn't a PSP2 though :) It's a PSP but a different model with different trade-offs for different consumers. The current PSP is still going to be sold alongside it.

Looks awkward. I've never bothered with a PSP but is that an analog stick? If it is then it looks almost unusable due to it's location.

I was thinking that myself. My thumb gets gramped already playing my PHAT psp, using this new analog looks akin to getting kicked in the balls for an extended period of time.

It might be a good little Media device, with its 3.8" screen, WiFi, Bluetooth and 16GB internal memory an expadable memory. But, TBH, I've lost alot of faith in Sony so I won't expect much. The screen and the browser on the current PSP is awful so I hope they will improve that. It actually looks quite nice when its controls aren't exposed but its quite ugly when its slid down. Its looks much more portable compared to the origianl PSP too.

Oh pulease. They just don't want 3000s to sit on the shelve.

The new iteration is clearly the future.

I hope they don't get rid of the current PSP. Digital downloads of games means that I woul have to go on the internet to buy the latest game which can be awkward, especially for kid gamers. It alos means Sony has total control over the price they charge for games and it means no more cheap second-hand games. Sure digital downloads have their positive side but I don't think its too practical.

It's great the way the screen slides down to protect the buttons from getting scratched.

Theres alot of talk of shops selling you the codes in a box or slip. I hope so because the prices on PSN never change alright and are downright outrageous for some of the older stuff.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 865 ✭✭✭Purple Gorilla

I'd say shops would have Kiosks that you could plug your PSP Go into and buy a game from it :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,426 ✭✭✭McGrath5

I'm a bit meh towards it atm, but i can honestly see this growing on me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,358 ✭✭✭seraphimvc

now i am interested on how are you gonna buy the game for this - 100% digital download?:pac: will the majority 'big' psp owners buy games with the same way in the future? it is not really a psp2 so i guess it is for a minor market?this product is just confusing.

besides, this is no 'leak' news as it is confirmed by the officials.good news is it comes with a new MGS game!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,317 ✭✭✭CombatCow

I thiks it looks really nice, im glad it has Bluetooth now, so I guess you will be able to connect BT earphones/headphones, the ps3 controller, chatpad and the ps3 bluetooth headset, awesome. :D:pac:

3.8" screen now compared to the psp3000 4.3"......not too bad, still a bit bigger then the iphone/DSI
Gonna trade in my 3000 for this deffo.

    CC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,726 ✭✭✭✭noodler

So there are no graphical/processor updates?

Then I guess it really isn't a PSP in a hardware leap sense.

EDIT: Shouldn't this be cheaper than a PSP 3000 or the same price since there is no UMD drive in it??

I guess it comes down to the saving of removing the UMD drive versus the cost of the extra memory. But I thought the extra memory was cheaper

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,317 ✭✭✭CombatCow

Yeah apparently it's going to be cheaper than a 3000, I guess we'll have to wait till E3 to get a price....

for the 3rd time its a redesign of the current psp. The internals are the same except for bluetooth. One thing i do expect is a completely new firmware independent from current psp range.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,682 ✭✭✭LookingFor

In the Qore video they actually said it would likely be targetting users who want a slightly more premium product. So I'd expect it to be the same price or more compared to the PSP-3000, if anything, not less.

It doesn't matter that it doesn't have a UMD drive. In the mobile market they can quite easily market smaller as better, + bluetooth & 16GB of memory etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,919 ✭✭✭✭Gummy Panda

I like it but i want to be able to download my exisiting UMDs to it. Also the EU PSN store sucks so that needs a rehaul before this launches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,779 ✭✭✭dmcg90

Has anyone a atually tried to download a game from the PSN through the Media Manager app for the pc? It is terrible! Bloated, slow, expensive compared to some places online... sigh

Looks ok, and it might be worth buying, if it weren't for the fact that the only games worth getting are MGS portable ops and vice city stories.

I know, Patapon and LocoRoco for a start. I've been playing WipeOut Pulse a lot lately (it even has custom soundtracks :D). Not to mention the best version of Final Fantasy Tactics. God of War: Chains of Olympus. Lumines II is godly. Jeanne D'Arc is brilliant. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (with Unite coming soon too). Tekken: Dark Resurrection.

Not to mention all the games coming this year. Soul Calibur, Tekken 6, LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm, Metal Gear Portable 2. Gran Turismo Portable might even be making an appearance . If Sega know what's good for them they'll release a Valkyria Chronicles spin-off for PSP.

Metal Gear Portable Ops is good but there's far better games (with no camera issues :pac:) for the system. I've never even played the PSP GTA games, probably should get around to them some day.

I'd consider it as a portable media player but if it was too expensive then I wont look twice at it.

    Sounds deadly. GT:Mobile!

Are Sony not alienating and confusing people with so many redesigns of the PSP. Why not just leave it at the PSP-3000 or actually bring out a PSP2.

I have to say I think the design is quite fugly.

Wow, they're actually playing GT at the end? If that isn't some PR stunt then maybe we'll see GT on the psp soon!!! "Sony soon" maybe but still soon enough :P

I haven't actually used my PSP in ages, but I thought you could access the Playstation Store directly from your PSP now?

On PS3 it's a breeze to use, so I'm sure it's the same on PSP.

You can but it's a store for the PSP. You can't dl most of the stuff that's on the PS3 store.

Surely you can download all the PSP stuff though, no?

If not I'm sure they'll have that sorted by the time Go is out.

You can download stuff from the PSP PSN store just as easily as you can on the PS3, although the download speed is slower. For those of you worried about having to re-download stuff all the time, you can back up your games to your PC using Media Manager for PSP, which Sony made available for free last year. Everything is in place for the PSP Go! and has been for quite a while now. All that's left to see is whether there'll be a way to rip your UMDs to the PSP Go!, but seeing as how the PSP Go! is not intended to be a replacement for the 3000 perhaps we'll never see this happen. I'm hoping this will get cleared up at Sonys E3 conference on Tuesday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

If access to UMD-only games is not made available, it better be CFW'd to play ISOs sharpish. I need KZL online.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭Josey Wales

So now that we know the PSP Go is going to be $250 is anyone thinking of getting it? I'm tempted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,281 ✭✭✭RobertFoster

€250 is too expensive IMO. Having to get all your games through Sony instead of retail just cripples it further in my eyes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,532 ✭✭✭WolfForager

If i'm in the US within the next year i'll probably buy it... otherwise, not a chance in hell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

PSP 3000 + 16GB Memstick gives you a hell of a lot more versatility, and a console that looks less like Cartman.
