So basically im an 18 year old guy and had sex with my girlfriend for the first time today. It was both our first times and we had talked about it a lot in advance and we both really wanted to for the right reasons. Now, as it happened she has been on the pill for over a year for acne but regardless we agreed we would still use a condom when we did. But for some reason, when the time came today, we got caught up in the moment and didn't. Now since it is definetly both our first times theres no worry of stds, etc. But im just really worried that we should have used a condom aswell in case she gets pregnant. Basically, is the pill by itself adequate?? I know that she does take it religiously at the same time every day, particularly since she knew we would probably be having sex soon. But iv heard there all sorts of reasons why the pill may not be effective...should i be worried?

Should be fine mate but no contraceptive is 100% fool proof so always keep a condom with you when you are seeing her.Being 18 the hormones can take over and leave your brain at the door(hell, that can happen at any age)so its better to have one and not need one than need one and not have one.

The pill is adequate contraception on its own PROVIDED it is used correctly, ie. is taken correctly and your girlfriend hasn't for example missed a pill in the last week or so.

Also it really depends on which pill she is on, as she is still a teenager and is on the pill for acne, it is more than likely that her GP has prescribed a pill such as yasminelle, which is less effective as a contraceptive but can be used to treat acne. These pills have lower hormone levels than the normal pill and is seen as better for younger girls.

I suggest you look at the site.org which explains lots about pill etc. and discuss this with your girlfriend. If you are both still concerned, I suggest that she go to a doctor who can put her mind at rest and/or give her the morning after pill, or if she has questions about her pill she could ask a pharmacist (you can ask them for a chat in privacy).

Hope that helps... but I am sure you'll be fine, its always good to put your mind at ease tho!

If she's taking the pill properly and you're sure she has no stds then you don't need to use a condom, so ride away I say!

Go to mass tonight and again in the morning, and you should be fine.

It's probably best to use more than one from of contraceptive. Get in the habit of using condoms so that you automatically put them on when needed, e.g. When medication might lower the affectiveness of the pill. Or while tipsy it should be habit so you don't need to think of it.

    First thing, then sex.

For both of you it was the first time, so no experience. Condoms, and Pills aren't giving any sure that nothing will happing, but not using them is more worse.

Next time Plan this and decrease the risk

You should have been able to answer those questions yourself before you went ahead with it. But as others have said, if your gf is on the pill it should be ok. The pill is a very effective contraceptive if used correctly. Where your problem starts is, if she is in anyway forgetful or if she has been on any medication that would conflict with the effectiveness of the pill. I have an 'at least 6mths' rule of having sex with a condom despite being on the pill. You can't really afford the consequences if you haven't decided what would happen if an accident occured. It's all about the planning ;)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combined_oral_contraceptive_pill
The typical use pregnancy rate among COCP users varies depending on the population being studied, ranging from 2-8% per year. The perfect use pregnancy rate of COCPs is 0.3% per year.

The chances are that she won't get pregnant this time but to be sure you are maybe better off using condoms as well.
