Hi, I work in a bar. I have been there the past few months and the manager has always been pleased with my progress. Today however he rang and told me to come in for my shift but that we need to have a little chat as soon as my shift is due to start. And that it's bad news for both of us. So now I get a terrible terrible feeling i'm going to get the sack.

How does anyone prepare for this kind of talk?

You poor thing:(All I can say is, don't take it personally, it may be that business has suffered etc etc. What I would say is try and stay calm and let him do the talking and make sure you get a proper explanation as to why this is happening. Try as best you can to leave on good terms. It may be that business will pick up again or circumstances change where he wants you to come back and work at some point and it's always nice to have that option.

Terrible news :( No one wants to be in that situation. Make sure to get a written reference as poster above said. Also, try be as amicable as possible (assuming they're nice and supportive about it) as leaving on a good note can only be good for future job possibilities. Head up anyway :)

Thanks a million guys. Smoking like a chimney now worrying about rent! I'm going to have to have a good strong whiskey if this is the case!

He's never been so negative and unsure sounding on the phone before (usually he's ranting on about one of the deliveries that came in etc....)

Right. Time to face the music soon

Well, I'd say if he's doing it in person (versus on the phone or what not), and giving you warning like this, it means they do like you there. It could also be something like a reduction in hours, not a full termination.

Definitely leave on a positive as note as you can ('I understand', 'It was great working here while I could, thanks for giving me the experience, etc.'). I'd say to give you call if there's any part time shifts that come up or what not as well.

Yes, and get a written reference. Also get them to write an official 'was terminated due to downturn in sales' or similar letter (ie versus getting fired) for the dole office if it comes to that.

This may not be that bad. As a manager myself I always try to speak face to face with my team and in private, especially on important matters. Ok you are expecting the worse but possibly he wants to speak to you quietly and in person on a completely seperate matter. For all you know it could be some issue where he needs your input or ideas. I hope for you its a minor issue.

If you are that worked up about it, then maybe call him back and explain that you feel very nervous about this meeting and ask him what is it about. If he is a good manager he should be able to recognise your distress and discuss it.

    Cheers and good luck
