    ...just an fyi.

I was at a client's today (nothing to do with cars...), and the subject turned to cars (inevitable, occupational hazard........)

Anyhoo, he has a 94 W124 300D Estate - the multivalve one iirc............and he's selling it, but it has a few issues:
    1. occasional misfire - has been diagnosed as FI pump needing reconditioning. Car runs fine everyday, so it's not holding things up. I certainly didn't notice it, so not sure under what conditions it happens.
    2. I think he said it needs 1 wheel bearing
    3. Some driveline shunt. Being an auto, and with 220k on it, I don't know if it's a transmission issue, but, like the misfire, doesn't seem to 'bother' the car, and it motors, daily.
    4. And here's the killer. R.H. inner wing, inside the little air intake has perforated. I think, actually I know, you'd have to take off the wing, to repair, but other than that, once 'in there', it'd be straightforward enough.

Other than that, the car looks very well, nice cream leather and carpet (car is blue), and a valet would make it look a million dollars.

    So, what's it worth ?

Does it have valid NCT, tax, etc? Worth not much in this country, because of the engine size and the idiotic taxation system. Anyway, is it for sale?

tax, yes iirc. No NCT iirc (booked - earliest appt is August).

    Yep, for sale

It would be nice to see more photos, especially the interior.
And regarding the missfire, etc. Does it smoke white / gray sometimes when driving?

Given that description I reckon it's worth 500 Euro on a good day.
    On a bad day, 300.

I was gonna say less than a grand. The W124 used to command a huge premium over other cars, but that was last year (or the year before)

Sad, but true, unfortunately. The best cars in the world have now only the value of... scrap / spares. Shame.

........yes it IS sad as the W124 were very well made and are very comfortable. Its just that bloody road tax.

..crumbs, I didn't think it was that low ! Yikes. That's breaker territory......:(

As for tax thing, well, there doesn't seem to be any way around that, so I've resigned myself to the fact that if you want something 'not ordinary', you have to suck it up. Buy the car at the right price, and it's still cheaper than buying an econo-box.

Very true, and of course you may find that someone out there that is used to paying the bigger annual tax so its not a consideration for them.

Actually for some reason I though this car was a petrol engine. Now I see its a 300D that changes my mind. Personally if it were in good shape with no rust I would revise my estimate and i'd probably give a bit more for it, if I wanted one :D

It could be €1000 but its chancey due to the problems it has.

Good low mileage tight one can be had for €3k so that would be a better bet IMO.

It is sad, especially for the seller!

W124 values are rock bottom now. The newest of them is 14 years old, they are not old enough to be classic or 'interesting' and not nearly new enough to be of interest to people who want to own a Mercedes. There are newer generations of both C and E class cars to pick from that can be had for reasonable money.

I suppose the good news is that W124 values can only rise as the cars get older and neglected ones get scrapped, leaving fewer, better examples. It will be another few years before that happens and I suspect a late 300D with rust and engine issues is never going to be worth a lot. First cars to command money will be the early (1985) well specced W124s.

I got interested in the W123 about 10 years ago and saw it happen with them. The first W123 I got was a 230TE for about 400 quid. Nothing really wrong with it except the marketplace for a 'large engined' 15 year old estate car comprised of appoximately 1 person.

It's only now I am warming to the W124... maybe one day.

GalTT - if your man is selling that car for around the 300 maybe let me know; I know a guy who could be interested.

So true. On the bright side though, there's nothing like looking at other people's €6000 econoboxes as you waft around in the comfort and quiet of your €1500 Mercedes. And yes, I do drive a W124. :)

    ...................I hear ya !

In fact I will be shortly driving around in a Mercedes 190E that was parked in a field for 2 1/2 years. Connected the jump leads and it started faster that anything I've ever owned.

Just need to sort out a draining battery, tax it, wash and polish and off I go !!

Best start another thread for that one !

    Tha's the quality of a proper Mercedes-Benz ;).
If you ever have any project in your head, I've got a very good 300(T)E-24V engine with transmission, still in the car.

By the way, is the Diesel version of W201 or W124 so rare animal in this country or they all died or something? I have been looking for one with 2 litre Diesel for long time, but they are not available. The W124 with that engine was probably not for sale in this part of Europe and 190D is very rare, especially in good condition.

I know where there is a 190D laid up for about 5 years.

I havent approached the owner yet. I think its a 2.5 though. Havent seen any 2.0D's

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭8~)

I tried a 190D 2.0 a couple of years ago. Very heavy, noisy and slow. I would take the 1.8 petrol over the diesel.

I have seen some W124 200Ds. Not sure if they sold in Ireland but pretty sure they were sold in the UK because they have been in RHD. Probably okay to use about town but I imagine pretty lacklustre on the open road.

Last night I went for a local tyre kicking meeting in our Motor Club and... one man accidently asked me if I know anyone looking for a 190D 2.0 :D. I could not believe it (!), so followed him home to have a look at the car. It was after 11 PM, so dark, but first impression OK, engine very nice ticking, no rust, big service history, receipts, etc., almost 2 years NCT. The car in general good looking, almandine red metallic, 5-speed transmission, sliding roof, heat insulating tinted glass, all the rest standard, but I have a great set of alloys 7 inch from my W124, so it may be usefull. I am just having my dinner and going to see the car in day light with high possibility of briving the Baby-Benz home :).
I know, it is noisier and slower than the petrol models, but the reliability, low maintenance and fuel economy is unbeatable in these Diesels.
Can't wait for the test drive...

My brother has a 190 2.0d and he gets about 40 mpg. My sister just recently got a 190 2.5d and gets similar, cos she is a bit more gentle on the throttle!!
    Great machines!!

I believe that 40 mpg would be the low end, as I get almost 40 mpg on average in my 123T 300TD, which weighs as much as a church and has aerodynamic of a brick.
I got my 190D last night. Not bad car at all, not that noisy, not slow either - the top speed is about 160 km/h, so I can break any speed limit in this country ;). I am currently uncrapping the car - removing all non-factory stuff and I am nearly there - took me only an hour or two. Now just some cosmetic works and she will be shiny and smell properly ;).

Well, I am a good bit bit more than 4' tall :). Was moving the seats when hoovering. The driver's seat is a bit worn in the usual spot, but not bad, will get some nice covers or get the seat somewhere.
Now I only need the throttle shock absorber (missing), change the rest of fluids, probably new bearing in rear wheel (slight noise) and tidying up...:p

I had a 94 200T (W124) a couple of years ago...in green(never really liked the colour) with the 7 seater option....beautiful cruiser and it carried a couch one day and 7 people the next. I also once owned an 91 190e but preferred the W124.

Those alloys and leather seats are real nice...beautiful combination of colour aswell...if it had the 5 ratio auto it would be a solid car.

used to love visiting this site for some of the best examples w124 estates around... www.w124.co.uk

    my favourite...silver and black

The W124 is a fantastic car, one of the very best Mercedes ever. I drove E220T, also have unused E300T Diesel and I prefer the Diesel engined (S)124s for their economy, low maintenance needs and incredible reliability. Also, the 5 and 6 cylinder Diesels sound nice, but they are very rare in this part of the world for some reason I do not know. Is the W124 a future classic? I think yes and the good examples are still priced high.

Yeah the fuel consumption was dismal on my petrol...its why the 5 speed autos are very popular. I sold it for the price i paid for it to another merc diehard...he was a german guy with a merc tatoo on his shoulder ! :)

I see you are also a fan of mercs...I had a 73 280ce and nearly bought a fintail. Next i am thinking about a mid 90s SL280....they dont seem to have aged at all.....although since my gf is south american..i am wondering if i would look like a drug dealer! :)

The R129 is a lovely car. I do not think you would look like a drug dealer in this country, as these cars are not popuar here ;). Do not limit your choice to 280 only, but prioritise the general condition of the car first. The bigger engines are not that much thirstier, unless you went for the 600SL :D.

In fact the 320 gets about 2mpg better than the 280...probably due to the weight...yeah if i get one i will try to get a mint example....it would have to have the panoramaic hardcover aswell...looks amazing.

Would love to keep her but limited space etc, if the Disco was a commercial I would be more inclined to keep the Merc but taxing two 2.5s doesn't suit my pocket. Disco was a surprise purchase though, only taxed the Merc a couple of weeks back till the end of September

I pass a white estate every week that hasn't moved in at least 12 months, don't know what model but probably a 220, the owner and his wife had it and and a saloon, both replaced by a W210 and an A140
