Hurrah, the IAAF fantasy athletics is back once again this year :)

It's pretty straightforward...for each of the 12 meets you choose a list of 6 athletes who will make up your team. You choose a new team of 6 athletes for each subsequent meet. One athlete each week is the team captain and gets double points. The first meet is Berlin on 14th June.

Bit of fun and a good way to embrace your inner anorak in relation to all things T&F.

I was joint winner of their competition in 2007 and they drew lots to decide the winner and (of course) I lost, but they promised me a signed T-shirt as compensation. I still haven't received it. I won't be entering again.

That's strange. I won one of the individual meets in 2008, think it was Prefontaine Classic, and won Adidas Jogging kit, and while it took a while to deliver, I got it eventually in around October/November IIRC.

Just a quickie - you probably haven't seen this thread in Feedback. Long story short some muppets set up a fantasy soccer game on another site, called it Boards.ie and used the forums there to have a go at the soccer mods. All got very messy and silly. Since then there has been a bit of a clamp down on using the Boards "brand" anywhere else. Generally as long as you warn teh Community Managers in advance (or even drop myseld, HM or Tingle a PM and we can do it) then all is ok.

I'll drop Dav a PM on Monday and let him know what you're up to (and good luck with the game!)

lets see the scores after the first event...should be up tomorrow id say! i wonder who'll take the early lead amongst the boards.ie league:D

Pah! Not me anyway. The Vlasic risk back-fired and my Belarussian shot-putter decided not to transfer her early season form to Berlin. Both came 2nd though. But Richards, Kanter and Stewart came through with victories and I won't even mention Sdiri...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,762 ✭✭✭✭ecoli

Vlasic as captain ouch and Payne completely messed me up in the hurdles though still a long way too go and with so many people picking there top picks first weeks the points will drop as the competition goes on

That's the thing; I was going to pick Isi and Bekele as well as Richards, Kanter and Stewart but held off so I wouldn't have crap teams towards the end

I think KB might be best left till Berlin for a cheeky double in the 5k and 10k and as captain quadruple points would be nice:D

Kenny B did the buisness for me, and Isa.. but i didnt check on who was actually running and robles let me down... so did Bayer... 385 for me this week. How bout everyone else?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭limerickleader

575 for me. isinbeyeva (capt), sanya richards, kerron stewart, gerd kanter all won, thorkildsen came second. edwin soi was my sixth and didn't count...just as well as he faded badly in the 5000m...

It'll be interesting to see who to pick later on in the season seeing as all the above are now ineligible for me...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 101 ✭✭LambDave

575 aswell, Vlasic let me down for the 600. Went with Carruthers in the womens 100 m hurdles and she was well down the field.

Ive picked Bekele, Richards, Chris Brown and Choge now so its gonna be tough to keep on getting wins...still have Isinbaeva to pick at least!

...also, does anyone know if Setanta are doing repeats of Berlin? Prosume they are!

550 - Vlasic & Mekhnevich let me down as well, also Thorkildsen. Just realised the You may only choose an athlete ONCE during the entire season rule. Will make it interesting as the seaon progresses.

At this stage it very hard to see how people are performing i mean we have people in the 500s but like some people found out only once you allowed to choose someone so who went all out and who held back?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 101 ✭✭LambDave

Knew the rules alright. For me its half and half, holding out for some part and trying to get points on the board for the other half.

Didn't think of the time when Bekele could double up in the 5000 and 10000 though so should have kept him for a while. Surely Bolt will also double up in one of the Golden league meets this year?

550 for moi! lost some points with kogo, but had wins with Richards as captain, Kanter, Cherry and Stewart. I made a big mistake which cost be 25 points choosing a Andrei Mikhnevich instead of Natallia Mikhnevich, both from Belarus and do the shot putt, I'll have to be more careful next time.

I kept some fo the big guns for later - Bekele, Isinbaeva, Vlasic, Mokoena for later, it's going to be very tight towards the end, we'll all have to pick our Irish athletes:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 75 ✭✭hurdler2009

Well, I went pretty much all out! It might backfire on me towards the end but sure we'll see how it goes!!!
I had Bekele as captain (btw I don't think there's any chance of him doing the double at a meet in one night), then it was Friedrich, Kanter, Mikhnevich, Richards and Stewart. I didn't know that only your top 5 athletes count at each meet!
At the minute though i'm top:D!! - probably not for long though!!!
Based on average scores the "boards.ie" league is ranked 33rd with an average score of 568 points.

The fantasy league includes World Championship and spans the entire competition
so might be a good one for Bolt and KB depending on how Bolt improves over the summer circuit

No I think this year it looks like they are doing two separate leagues one for the W.C. in august and one for the rest of the selected competitions throughout the season.

There are 2 separate leagues but the current one covers 12 events incorporating both golden league and WC.

    However note that:
All scores in the both the World Championships and the World Athletics Final will be worth double (x2)
Should your selected athlete compete and score points in more than one event during a meeting, only the best single result/score will count towards your team total.

Ah right sorry really didn't read up on the rules properly this year!!:)

yeah, tell me about it...distinct whiff of dark horses selected this time around. by the time the end of the season comes around, i'll be scouring the entry lists for up-and-coming colombian shot putters and mongolian sprinters

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,762 ✭✭✭✭ecoli

Cragg could have stiff competition from the youngster Gregson from Oz. Pity Virens son pulled out would have loved to see what he could do

Renny Quow 1st in the 400m...good start for me :D

    Sh!t not a great night a few gambles didn't really pay off!!!!
Ok so captain Isinbaeva won 200.... barely!
    Thorkildson 3rd 50.
    Kaki gone:( 0.
Dexter Faulk decided to forget about his early form and finished 5th 30.
    Fabiana Murer - hoped she'd finished 2nd but she ended 5th 30.
Sean Wroe also forgot his form to finish 4th 40.

    Total: 350

had these two myself thought Dexter would be out to prove a point after the US trials, he did though in fairness proved that trials was no fluke. choge also 3rd. defar was a nice captain choice
    total points: 450.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 223 ✭✭DJS

Thorkildson 3rd as my captain let me down
But 500 points so im happy
    defar
    Powel
    Cherry
    Choge(was sooo close)
    Richards

Next week im goin to find it hard to pick winners, but trying to keep sum for berlin all the same.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,762 ✭✭✭✭ecoli

    Defar (Captain)
    Choge
    Kaki
    Powell
    Faulk
    Pitkamaki

    Total:480

five more than last week but happy enough still have a good few trying to keep big names spread out with likes of Kenny B, Bolt, Gay, Isinbayeva,Friedrich and Stewart still left so should be good for the overall hopefully

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 268 ✭✭Frank3142

it wont let me play yet it said "after some more testing we should be able to let you play"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,623 ✭✭✭dna_leri

    530 points:
    Stewart 200
    Pitkamaki 100
    Cherry 100
    Faulk 30
    Powell 100

Joint 2nd on boards league with 1080.
Next one comes up quickly, running out of good choices...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭limerickleader

managed 500 points...vlasic 200 as captain (no Friedrich to unnerve her?), quow 100, pitkamaki 100...choge and melkamu both offered up 50 points each as well...

the meets are definitely coming thick and fast...lausanne and rome this week...if last weekend's exploits are a barometer, it should be exciting again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭Rineanna

    530 for me this time.

Nyangu, Cherry, Powell (Captain) and Quow did the business for me, but Dexter kind of Faulked up my score, while I won't even mention Kaki.

But the good news is I still have Bolt, Isinbayeva, Robles, Felix, Dibaba, Wariner, Merritt, Bekele, Spotakova and a few more big names to spread out over the remaining meets, of which there are many!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 464 ✭✭runjb

bit of a disaster for me...
    kaki fell = 0
    alistar cragg(felt like i should support him) = 10
vlasic (capt thank god!) = 200
Faulk (they blew him up way too much on the iaaf preview) = 30
    Lopes-Schliep (Good enoigh run) = 50
Vasilevskis (thought he could upset the odds) = 30

    total = 320

just picked my team for tomorrow night, hoping for a few more points!! still not putting in all the big guns,i have a fresh team in:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 464 ✭✭runjb

Results from tonight...much improved on last time:

    Robles (captain) 1st = 200
    Burka 1st = 100
    Mekonnen 1st = 100
    Ukhov 2nd = 75
    Jeter 2nd = 75
    Harper 7th = 10

    Total of 550. I'm happy with that:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,623 ✭✭✭dna_leri

Not such a good day at the office - no winners:
    Spotakova - 150
    Walker - 40
    Ukhov - 75
    Lebedeva - 50
    Jamal - 75

Dropped down to 3rd in boards league.
