We're flying to Johannesburg from Dublin via Abu Dabi and wondering if there's free drink (alcoholic & non-alcoholic) on board the flights. I can't see any info on their website nor in the flight details.

    Yes, which is fastest answer.

I have taken many many long haul flights and oddly enough, although always being a free drinks trolley, I have never had an alcoholic drink but then again I always fly night fligths.

The novelty is not all it seems if you have not experienced it before.

Thanks for the reply Berty. I'm sure the novelty isn't as good once you are actually on the flight. I find flying very tedious and so a few glasses of red wine will knock me out for a good bit of it hopefully.

They sure do, fantastic airline, flown many times with them to KL. Hopefully the tedium can be relieved by a usually excellent selection of AVOD.

One minor point is that Abu Dhabi airport is not very geared toward transit if you have a long stopover ... they were upgrading / expanding last time I was thru so it may have improved.

    Enjoy the trip ...

They have expanded the Abu Dhabi airport with a large new terminal which has improved the place slightly.

Luckily for me I never have to stay longer than 2 hours there.

Etihad are great and I'd try fly with them before any other airway these days.

I think their beer selection is quite limited though.

    What's AVOD?

Just following on from this, what do people do on long haul flights to keep themselves entertained? I'm not much of a sleeper. Is the AVOD really that good? What else do people do to entertain themselves on long haul flights?

I'll be taking my 6th long haul flight with Eithad in the next month and I usually bring my MP3 player, books, sudoku and a few magazines from the airport.

I never end up using/looking at any of them because the AVOD is so good. There is usually at least 7/8 out of 30 or so movies I'm interested in watching and then throw on top of that a few episodes of my favourite TV shows.

Also, alcohol is four times stronger if consumed in flight because of the cabin pressure. Drinking alcohol before flying has a stronger effect still after take off but I'm not sure to what degree.

I've always had a theory similar myself, never knew the science behind it: Simply always said: "The altitude makes alcohol come back on you" - whatever that means. Basically my reasoning is drawn from a stag do that I got worse for wear at the night before and was flying home at 11am, hadnt had a drop in 8 hours and was merely groggy upon boarding, only to be pi$$ed drunk again 10 mins after take-off. Really unsettling when u dont know whats goin on.

Im flying Etihad for the first time in July, connecting in Abu Dhabi , only there two hours thank God, as I've heard there's v little to do. It seems the concensus is that Etihad are quite good, on-board entertainment sounds good, free vile of crude oil for every passenger too apparently.

Flew Dublin / Abu Dabi with them there last month.

    - There was free drinks (non-alcoholic and alcoholic).
    - They had one of those TV screen things for each seat and it had about 80 films to chose from. Personally I thought they were all sh!te but one of my mates hadn't seen a load of recent releases etc.
    - I played multiplayer draughts with a mate for about 90 mins.
    - I just listened to my MP3 player.

On the way back I just slept the whole way. They do try and wake you up for dinner though. Just punch them, they won't try again :D

Fantastic airline, for all the reasons listed above. Abu Dhabi is an awful airport, was delayed there for 6 hours due to fog and it's terrible.
