I seen a thread on this a few weeks ago but I can't find it for the life of me.

I'm a student in the North, where I live during the week and I return home to the South at weekends. I'll be returning to uni in September (until May) and will be living in rented accomodation. I'll have rent receipts and electricity bills in my name. I have rent receipts with a northern address in my name from September to May for the last two years.

My bf is thinking about buying a car in the north, registering it in my name, with my northern address and then bringing it across without having to pay the vrt. Will this legally work?

I think you need a social security number and to actually be working/paying tax there as well as your proof of address. If you have these then i don't see why not. Just don't tell them you're a student.
The car will also have to be in your name for 6 months before returning and will have to stay in you name for a year before you can change ownership to him.

If you think the VRT people haven't a clue, then you could try it. But if I was them I would ask if you were a student, especially if you are the student age group and you moved house every year and only have bills up to the end of May. In the meantime who is going to drive this car, or is it going to be parked up in the North?

The June-August gap in proof of address (rent receipts/bills) would end any chance, let alone the student clause.
