    Hi there,
Recently started looking at the volvo S60 as a possible car to buy. Be lookin around the 3500 mark so '00 or '01. Just wondering is there any problems with them, thats the 2.0T engine?

Are they a bucket of poo or a great drive?

    regards

I don't recall there being any issues with the 2.0T engine in the S60. It's quick enough, but it does have a fierce thirst.

The turning circle is pretty poor for a car of that size and I found the steering very light on the one I drove recently, but the seats are very comfy.

Just watch the electrics in these cars, they are known to have gremlins. I have a 2006 S40 and the driver's door lock is begining to form a mind of it's own. Other than that my first Volvo owner's experience has been good so far.

Very underrated cars imo probably due to the fact that they are not German.

My father is on his second S60, both 2.0T. Very comfortable cars with good specs. The 2.0T is a nice engine, not the fastest from standstill but great when overtaking and you also get the nice 5-cylinder warble.
He hasn't found them to be bad on juice but I suppose it's how you drive it, he takes it easy enough usually and gets good mpg. In fact, he gets better mpg from the 2.0T than from my 1.6 Vectra so go figure...
I think front suspension and links are something to look out for on older models and on his '02 bulbs would blow every now and again but that was the only complaint he ever had with it.
If buying, try go for SE spec as it has most of the creature comforts. I think they're an under-rated car but then that can be good for secondhand buyers as they don't hold their value as well as say an A4 or 3 Series even though in some regards (comfort, spec) they are a superior car.

I have a '02 S60, but it's a diesel (2.4T) so I can only speak for that engine. It's a fantastic torqey (if thats a word :) ) driver. Great on long drives and fast. the car itself is very comfortable and loaded with extras as the guys have said. All models have tons of extras as standard. Heated seats are great on those cold mornings :D

Our family car is the V70 2.0T. That engine is a beaut; lovely and smooth with plenty of umph when it needs it. The 5cyl gives it a nice sound as stated but because its a big engine mounted transversly the turing circle does suffer. Ours is an auto & the wife uses it almost only around town so it averages only 21mpg. On a longer run its gets better than 30.
Get the best spec you can find and it'll be a very comfortable place to be.

Ive heard of alot of problems relating to engine running with these engines specifically in the S60. The problems are poor idle, stalling and generally not running good from tickover. It was down to throttle body together with software controlling idle and in many cases even from new, volvos fix was not that successful. Now Judging by the comments above, perhaps this relates to only a small number of cars or very early examples but it put me off a 01 S60 5 years ago.

A very underrated car. A lot of comfort / space / poke / toys for very little money. The 5 pot 2.0T is thirsty, but what do you expect from a 2l turbo charged petrol engine in a heavy car? It's not a great drivers car, very few cars this size are ;)

Why don't you go for the S80? More space, more comfort, more toys again and it won't cost you anything extra to buy, insure, tax and run over an S60 apart from maybe a little bit more fuel...

Yeah, I forgot to mention that, yes, it does turn like a boat! It's 3 point turns just to get into parking spaces :(

thanks for all the comments. Its that little bit more fuel that'd be the problem!:pac: kinda strectching it to a 2.0T as is. I'm coming from a TDI 150. spotted a nice enough looking s40 T4 200hp there with supossedly an equal thirst to the s60. any comments?

The S40 is a good bit older and smaller. It is also based on the Mitsubishi Carisma, and that T4 apparently does suffer from a lot of torque steer.

A fine car by any means, but the S60 is a far better one.

The difference between 21MPG and 24MPG at 10k miles per year is about €25 per month. Well worth the extra car you are getting imho. Insurance might very well be lower on the S80 (a 3.5l 7-series was cheaper for me to insure than a 2.5l 5-series of same year, value, mileage)

Do your sums before you make your mind up!
