Is Eircom stopping Sky from offering Irish customers broadband? If this is true it's surely illegal. I must ring Eamon Ryan to find out exactly what the story is because Eircoms broadband is crap, my brother in England has Sky broadband and it's excellent.

Sigh..... Sky probably aren't too bothered with offering a BB service here in Ireland, our infrastructure sucks and Eircom have absolutely no intention of investing in upgrading the copper (fibre to every home is but a pipe dream), the government has no money so we are stuck in the dark ages as regards fast and reliable BB.

I see that Sky have just announced that Sky Player will be available to anyone with an Xbox 360 from the autumn, not much good unless you have a decent connection .

I don't think you can blame Eircom on this one. Even if they where on top of their game, Sky still wouldn't bother with it. With Sky, Ireland is just an after thought.

I think you can blame Eircom for this one along with Comreg.
Why would they try and come here and compete with Eircom. Its totally unecomical for them as LLU rates and line rental are 2nd highest in Europe along with Eircom kicking and screaming preventing access to exchanges for competitors.
None of the broadband providers make any money reselling Eircom BB packages (the money is to be made in landline & mobile calls), in fact Eircom are thrilled when you do this as they get the money without the hassle and cost of processing the competitors BB customers accounts.

well for me the real culprits here are the government for allowing eircom to be privatised and handed over to venture capitalists who just creamed what they could off it and have now left the company with a debt of 3.4 billion. The current owners (australian crowd) have or never had any interest of what SKY might want to offer their customers in this country. they had to make as much profit as they could for their parent co in Australia and that was as much as their interest was. But who allowed it to get to this stge - the good 'ol government. Mary'Rourke et al have a lot to nswer.

Universal broadband infrastructure exists in the U.K. but, unfortunately, not in Ireland. Sky entered the broadband/ telephone market through the acquisition of a small company (easynet?). If they were interested, they would do the same in Ireland possibly acquiring Smart/Magnet/Perlico/Other.

Easynet was larger than any irish ISP other than eircom. Possibly bigger than eircom. In 1/3rd of UK exchanges originally as LLU

There are no big enough LLU ISP here and unlike UK, LLU loses money here.

Moved from Satellite to Broadband as this is really nothing to do with Sky Pay TV via Satellite.

Sky is not ripping anyone off here, the UK LLU market is completly different to Ireland and as such cannot be compared like with like.

To a big degree you can blame Eircom, eircom have kept LLU pricing higher then it needs to be in Ireland as such making it unattractive to companys in Ireland.

High prices has also restricted growth by exisiting companys like Smart and BT on their LLU rollouts.

So yes you can actually blame Eircom

    Or Government and the Regulator.

The Government Privatised eircom with little thought and regulation (eithier on pricing, investments or leveraged-buyouts/asset-strippers). The so called investors milked it for as much as they could and ComReg and the Governments did nothing.

eircom behaved as any untrammeld unregulated company owned by vulture capitalists would, so I don't blame eircom management at all.

Well use Comreg should have powers, however when Comreg have asked Eircom to change Eircom have brought them to court in the past

Broadband speed and availability is subject to your location. Sky Talk or BT line rental may be payable. Standard set-up costs apply

Free Line Rental for New Sky TV Customers: Get free Sky Talk Line Rental for 12 months when you join Sky TV, take a Sky+HD box and subscribe to the HD Pack and a Sky Talk Calls package. After the first 12 months you’ll pay the then applicable Sky Talk Line Rental charge (currently £10 pm). Not available in conjunction with any other Sky offer. Offer subject to availability.

Line Rental offer for Existing Sky TV Customers: Pay £60 one-off up front payment to receive Sky Talk Line Rental for £0 per month for 12 months when you take a Sky+HD box and subscribe to the HD Pack and a Sky Talk Calls package. After 12 months you’ll pay the then applicable Sky Talk Line Rental charge (currently £10 per month). Offer conditional on you completing your order for a Sky+HD box and the HD Pack within 90 days of taking this offer or you will be charged the full cost of Sky line rental (backdated to when you took up the offer). If you are currently benefitting from a Sky Talk Line Rental offer you can take up this offer and your current offer will terminate immediately. Not available in conjunction with any other Sky offer. Offer subject to availability. Offer ends 25 June 2009.

Which basically means that you do pay your normal BT linerental, you just don't pay the extra Sky Line Rental for 12 months.
Not as great as the advertising makes out.

It depends, if your in a fully unbundled area you can go straight onto MPF, if however MPF is not available at present and is coming soon you have to continue on BT retail line rental until MPF is available.

If your in some village your unlikely to get MPF at your exchange anytime in the next few years and as such you wouldn't be onj Sky's rollout and will remain on a BT line and accordingly pay line rental to BT Retail.

MPF is just not going to be available on every exchange due to the costs involved in rolling out the kit, it has to be viable and make business sense to do so in that exchange
