WWE Unforgiven has gone the way of the Dodo. WWE will replace the show with the first-ever WWE Breaking Point PPV on 9/13 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec Canada.

Based on a survey WWE sent out to fans several weeks back, Breaking Point PPV will feature a submission theme in the main events. The Breaking Point title was one of a number of choices fans were asked to give their opinion on for the PPV's theme.

WWE had been using the Unforgiven name since 1998.

Tickets will go on sale 7/11.

I dont like these gimmicky PPVs like Extreme Rules, Lockdown and now this. I really dont like a PPV with all submission matches, nothing wrong with the match in itself, but every match being the same I can see it getting boring. The only thing that can save it is having technically excellent wrestlers in every match. Just cant get my head around having the likes of Big Show and John Cena in submission matches.

This is exactly what I thought. There's only a handful of workers in WWE capable of having a decent submission based match.

Breaking Point PPV will feature a submission theme in the main events.

I'm not sure the whole PPV will be submission matches. Maybe it will just be the WWE and WHC title matches.

Jesus thats a horrible idea. It looks more like a TNA gimmick than a WWE one.

Imagine HHH -v- Big Show or something to that degree.

how many wrestlers even use submission finishers these days anyway?? the only ones that come to mind are the walls of jericho, stfu, and the hells gates, so how can they base a ppv arond that?? at least with other themed ppvs theres a reason for the gimmick matches..

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 22,933 Mod ✭✭✭✭Bounty Hunter

as its only a submission theme maybe two less technical wrestlers could be in a I Quit match and if it is only the main events with the stipulations I could se thi working ok but tbh im not a fan of single theme matches for a PPV

Your right there are not many using them

But they have started to reappear
Edge has started using the sharpshooter, Finlay has the celtic knot, big show has started using the camel clutch,

Other ideas would be, Punk could bring back the anaconda vice, HHH will use the the figure four.

yeah thats true alright but its not like the days of angle, benoit, eddie etc etc... it could be kinda cool if some of the wrestlers wont reveal there submissions until the ppv and worked angles around that..

I'd much rather if they brought back the King of the Ring PPV around June instead of introducing these gimmicky PPVs.

Good call. King of the ring was an event that elevated the superstar that won it to main event and world champion status. There are exceptions such as billy gun, mabel, etc but the majority of the winners got a big push after the event. Austin is a prime example of this.

As far as this breaking point event goes it really does sound awful. Its like an event like that can get stale very quick.

WWE should stick to basics, get the booking right, get the development of storylines right and develop and push superstars correctly and not half arséd like they have done with some superstars recently.

They brought it back last year for a three hour show. Regal won it and was set for a massive push and then....:(

why is wrestling trying to emulate mma.its ok to add realism to matches but come on the knockout punch is ridiculous so is the hells gate!raw has become terrible recently while smackdown has become increasingly better, why?because smackdown is a more pure wrestling product, thats what i believe fans want.nearly every match at judgement day that was for the blue brand was excellent but raws matches at the show was terrible.submission ppvs isnt a answer to fledging buyrates, good booking is.do wrestling fans really wanna see a whole ppv of submissions,i bet mma fans wouldnt even want to see a mma card ending with all submission. gimmick ppvs can work when varied, such as lockdown but how many variations of a submission match can you have? i hope im wrong though!

Hopefully they'll start pushing a Finlay v Regal match for this, then we could all just watch that match on the preshow and go to bed. :P

could a stink face classify as a submission?if it does i say bring back the kish at the event solely for this reason and have him win the belt off orton!what a shock that would be :)

KotR should definitely be brought back as a proper PPV again with the winner having three matches in the one night.

They could not feature the two main titles for one PPV without losing any business if they promote the KotR properly.

I must have watched the one with Mabel and Savio Vega in the final about twenty times when I was younger. I remember they made such a big deal out of the fact that he had already faced IRS before the show in a qualifying match because Razor was injured.

The only worry I'd have is that todays commentary teams are just not up to the task of getting anyone over. Back then I really believed Savio had a chance because of the great commentary.

Edit: A submission themed night would be crap.

    What, together?!

Actually, given the choice between a pro-wrestling forum slumber party in a double bed and the possibility of a Batista -vs- Big Show submission macth, I'd probably need some time to consider choices.

If everyone agrees to sleep head-to-tails though, it's a no brainer :pac:

I actually think it could be a great idea, depending how its handled. This PPV might cause some superstars to start using new submission moves which they use for the PPV then add to their normal moveset.

And hopefully we'll get to see a new Ultimate Submission match (I think thats what its called, the match thats like an Iron Man match but with submissions only)

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,520 Mod ✭✭✭✭DM_7

I could handle an I quit match and an Ultimate Submission match. Once the PPV is kept to only a small number of submmission matches it could work.

I never expected the championship scramble matches to work at Unforgiven last time but i thought it went okay. The first run of breaking point can use some submission matches and if it fails they can move away from the idea the next year.

They could have HHH vs HHH for the HHH world championship in a HHH submission match where HHH wins with a leglock.

Mabel wrestled 3 matches in one night? Sounds like a good ppv!

Stole the name from UFC 81 though, Terrible Name,Terrible theme for a PPV and I agree with the idea for King Of The Ring,

Stole the name from UFC 81 though, Terrible Name

Not so sure if that's specifically where they got their name from. Wasn't Breaking Point also the name of the band who did RVD's theme tune with WWE?

Fairly generic and common name, so I wouldn't say the stole it from UFC.

They polled the 'WWE Universe' to decide the name.

    http://www.wrestling-edge.com/wwenews.php?subaction=showfull&id=1242670705&archive=&start_from=&ucat=1&
WWE sent out a survey to some members of their WWE Universe mailing list today, asking fans to respond to questions pertaining to naming a future event that would feature submission matches "for all main events on the card."

The potential names for the event were:

    *WWE Total Submission
    *WWE Submission Sunday
    *WWE Breaking Point
    *WWE Submit & Quit

    hahaha, 'WWE Submit & Quit'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,602 ✭✭✭✭ShawnRaven

    WWE SUBMISSION SUNDAY

They must have been getting desperate for names like that. That one looks like something a specific Irish Promoter would come up with!

Breaking Point was probably the best of the lot.

I hear they've decided to call it 'WWE If you submit you lose unless we have some stupid surprise ending to the match'
