I'm after throwing out a loada clothes recently that were too small. Anything nice is in someone elses wardrobes or lost in the madness of several weekends. Now I need some clothes and some tips on buying.

I need to know what is good lookin on a guy? Basically I need jeans, some sort of jacket and shoes both casual and going out types. Where can I get all this sorted? budget is flexible but have to keep it realistic.

Also is the north any use? I hear a lot about Kildare and happen to be nearby it and Dublin a lot. I've a brown thomas voucher to use up too so wanna go there to buy something too!
Think of this as queer eye for the straight guy meets boards.ie lol and thanks for all advice in adavance :)

    Hi there, First things first:
What colouring do you have...eyes, skin, hair? Also what height and bodytype are you?

If you have a Brown Thomas voucher you should head to BT2 and check out All Saints....they are great for unusual 'going-out' pieces and sharp tailoring with an edge. They also have a stand alone store in Dublins Powerscourt shopping centre.

    Some other good shops...
*Pepe Jeans - great for jeans-from ultra plain "London" to the slightyl baggy 'Jinho' and everything inbetween except super-skinny, shirts and sometimes tees (watch the sizes though...differant to alot of stores)
*River Island - have have come on a lot recently...have great shirts, jumpers, polos, suits section (also have all the super trendy 'band' clothes ie that checked shirt & cardigan look...works well on some guys especially at your age and if you are slim and tall)

Other than that maybe check French Connection and the Matthew Williamson range of tees in H&M is lovely.

Ha ha yeah sounds like it!! Nope and in fact if this was a lady posting a fashion question I would not be so quick to recommend Pepe!! My OH loves all his Pepe jeans and my ex flatmate loves his Pepe shirts (calls them his 'pulling shirts' ) They are not happy that they no longer get a discount there!!

It probably sounds like I work for All Saints too...I wish!!! Im in a totally unrelated job that has alot more t9o do with cars than clothes!

Another idea might be to take some pictures of men's style, or pieces you've seen, that you like with you when shopping!

At least then you'll have some idea of what you're looking for! If you go out with nothing in mind, you tend to buy rubbish, as opposed to things that would actually be good for your wardrobe!

Another idea would be to buy pieces as part of outfits. If you buy a pair of jeans, find a t-shirt or shirt that would look good with them - As opposed to buying the first things you see that you like, coming home and then discovering you have lots of nice new clothes, but can't make one decent outfit!

As far as shops are concerned, River Island is a good one for guys, I think - seem to have some nice shirts and jumpers in there.

Marks and Spencer's always have good quality, reasonably priced basics and wardrobe staples.

Topman. Burton. BT2. Arnotts. Urban Outfitters. Dunnes, even! You might even find some cool pieces in charity shops.

You mentioned you're nineteen - if you're a student, you'll be able to get discount in a few of these places! Topman, for definite!

This is typically the prob I have. I buy as required eg when i've actually nothing to wear! hence I need some staple pieces in the wardrobe that will last a bit. I'm not a student sadly but maybe I can convince a friend to come along :P

On a personal note I don't like cardigans. Its out of my style. Ditto with the white shirt and cut away tie look. ugh Just seems all too "Italian" Think everyday. I'm thinking dark denim jeans mixed with a light coloured T-shirt but also still looking ok to go out later? The shoes and jacket is a big concern as is jeans. These key ingredients are missing big time from my wardrobe.
I've a very basic idea of what to do.
times like this I wish I had fashion conscious friends! or someone like what ye see on TV.

Also whats going on in clubs? Seems the dress code is too variable to the point i've to think a fair bit about what to wear out? partially insecure but also trying to set off a good image as the spots dont help at all!

ps.. pics up tomorrow at some point.

Thanks again to all who helped here

    Ha ha I totally agree!!!

You can't go wrong with some interesting tees and dark jeans for going out. Save 'funny slogan' tees for a more casual look.

Try a layered look too...tees over long sleeves, solid coloured shirts open over funky tees, funky coloured/patterned shirts open over plain tees etc.

If you're not a big fan of formal shoes try plain black runners....the skater ones. They are comfy and you won't get hassle from bouncers over them. Or a pair of nicely scuffed Converse!

River Island are very good for jackets...they have a huge variety.

    Enjoy your shopping spree!! :D

Sounds like you dont go for the whole feminine indie look - and for that, I say kudos. Its a terrible look.

A nice pair of jeans is a great place to start. My favourite brand of clothing is Superdry, so most of my recommendations are from them but Ive thrown in a few others.

The first pair there are Superdry. Quite dear, but definately worth it. They dont fade too much either (assuming you take care when you wash them!) and go great with a casual T and a pair of trainers. The second pair are Levis, and the third pair are from Next. Id avoid skinny jeans at all cost, and you dont want a pair that are tight either (not too fond of Wranglers either, but I can see their appeal). Diesel Jeans are also very good quality.

For T-shirts, especially with the summer coming up, Y-necks, V-necks and Grandpa shirts are ideal. Their cheap, very light and wear well. You can always throw them on under a shirt too if youre heading out at night and its chilly, but you dont want a T collar showing up under your shirt. These 2 are from River Island. Shops like that, and Next and Topman are good for picking up cheap t-shirts.

If you want something heavier, a good Henley or rugby style top is great. Very comfy, they look good and they'll keep you warm on those too-cold-for-a-t-shirt days, yet too warm for a hoody. Superdry do amazing variations of them.

For Hoodies, Superdry and American Eagle are excellent. Avoid buying hoodies in River Island, Next, Topman, H&M etc. as the quality is usually poor, and athey get uncomfortable after a few washes, and shrink quite a bit.

Again, blowing Superdry's horn here, they do very stylish jackets too, especially leathers. Theyre very dear, but think of it as a long term investment because they wear excellently, and if you look after them, they always look good as new.

River Island do a slightly cheaper range of leathers, especially those ones with the "mock hoody" underneath (its basically just a leather jacket with a fabric hood). On some of them you can even remove the hood from it.

Footwear wise, basically you only need four types, if even that many. I have a pair of Vans sneakers, a pair of casual Trainers, a pair of shoes and a pair of runners for sports, gym, etc.

Not a fan of that whole superdry random number/letter/slogan combination or american eagle/abercrombie for that matter. But each to their own.
