Tap Delay

Can anyone reccomend a tap delay pedal which will let you tap in the tempo while the pedal is off/bypassed? I am currently using a DD6 & a line selector to do this which works fine but its just taking up too much space on my pedal board.

I've also been checkin this out which looks pretty decent. Never heard of tap tremolo. Again, same problem though, you can't tap in the tempo while it's bypassed although I dont think it would pose as much of a problem as the delay in a live setting

TC Nova Repeater for example. It is a stripped-down version of the Nova Delay (doesnt have the presets, LED readout, etc). Should have stellar delay quality.

Their site says it's the only pedal in the price range with a dedicated tap-tempo switch, don't know if that's true or not though..

The EHX Memory Man Hazarai is great.

It has a seperate switch for the tap tempo and it's quite small. Also has a filter knob which i think is a great feature.

dd20? ...It definitely has the tap function...

    T-Rex Replica does and it's amazing!! :D

all great pedals but from what I can find on the google-nets none of them appear to allow you to tap in the tempo while the pedal is off/bypassed :(

Akai Headrush E2 will do it. I know, I have one.

sweet, how would you rate it?

Awesome. The delay time goes from half a millisecond up to about 23 seconds. It's also got a looper and echo. A few of the lads here have them too. I bought mine from Dolphin Music in the UK.

Here's the link (also has some more technical info) http://dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/5529-akai-e2-headrush.html

The akai is a great pedal but I only use it as a looper. For my tap tempo I use the Line6 Echo Park. Mainly because it has a dotted eight mode with a modulated chorus sound for nailing that edge u2 sound. Just tap the tempo on the pedal then click hard to engage the delay.

very tempted, do you find it affects your overall tone much, is it true bypass?

I don't notice any change in tone, but I'll check it out tomorrow with my loop pedal. I'll switch it in and out of the loop, that pedal is TB so it'll give a good idea.

I don't think the headrush is TB, but I'm not really 100% on that.

I've got an RE-20 which can tap-tempo while the effect is bypassed. I don't know if you're interested in Space Echo delays, though, it's sort of a specialty.

But, the DD-20 and RE-20 are from the same 'family', would that not suggest the DD-20 can tap while the effect is bypassed? I'd be really surprised if any pedal actually didn't let you tap while the effect is bypassed - that's ****ing stupid.

You'd be surprised. I'm not mad about the DD-20 though, a mate has one and I find that it affects your tone pretty dramatically. Also seems to give a bit of hum or buzz (but that may just be his pedal)

I find it odd that no one has made a dead simple true bypass tap delay - 2 buttons ,1 effect volume controll & 1 feedback controll, solid metal case and lets you tap in the rate while bypassed. It's all that many people need for live use.

Well, a true bypass delay has one disadvantage.

If you turned it off mid song the delays won't trail out, they'll just stop abruptly.

I'm probably wrong but I think you could avoid that if the signal chain (from input to output) within the pedal was wired in paralell as oposed to in series.... or something. I'm not sure how to type what I'm thinking. 2 circuits kinda...... nah, I give up :o

Im pretty sure Nova Repeater lets you do this.

The Memory Man tap function definitely works with the effect off. That was one of the main reasons i bought it...

I have a TC Nova delay and it has this function as-well, dalays are very good as-well. You can also tap the tempo on the guitar when you hold the Tap tempo down and all this done while effect is tuned off.

cool, didnt know the Nova Reaper & Memory Man had that function, just assumed they didn't since they don't seem to mention it. You'd think it would be a strong selling point tht they would advertise

The Nova sounds great in the demos but even though its stripped down it still seems to offer a lot of functions which I personally would never use. It also looks like it might look pretty ugly after a couple of rounds in my pedal case.

Glassheart, which memory man is that? The standard one only appears to have 1 fotswitch. Is it the hazarai one?

It's the Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai. The Deluxe Memory Man is an analogue delay.

As for the 'strong selling point', I kinda took it a common sense that the tap switch would work all the time :p

Well I took it as common sense that it wouldn't seeing as most pedals with true bypass are inactive whilst bypassed

This is what you are looking for. It has been discontinued but there are still a few around. It is the exact same as the T-Rex Replica, but can be had for significantly less (as it is discontinued). I also think it sounds better than the Nova (although the Nova offers more features).

nova do a few good 1's

Spot on mate, Exactly what I'm looking for. Doesn't say if it's true bypass but if it is I'm sold. Cheers! :)

Yup, its true bypass. I have one (bought at the discounted price) and I really like it. I had also been considering a Nova, but found it a bit too feature laden. Also, the Vintage Delay sounds a bit better to my ears.

No, they're just bypassed. The effect circuit is still there, and on, but your signal isn't going anywhere near it. The ciruit is still doing everything it would usually do, but nothing's going into it, and nothing's coming out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,817 ✭✭✭✭Dord

OK, I tested the Headrush E2 in and out of the loop with the pedal off. Tone seemed the same, or possibly a very minimal change. However there is a tad bit of hissing. Normally I would have my decimator running to take care of that but I left it out for the purposes of testing.

In other news I need new patch cables. All except 3 are dead. :(

Was doing some reading on delay pedals, found some (to me, anyway) interesting information.

If you want some analogue tonez, the Malekko Ekko 919 and Diamond Memory Lane are both analogue delays with tap tempo.

I stand corrected good sir. It seems most of them operate like this. I have to say, I'm pretty surprised at that. Surely if you have a big pedal rig with a lot of "true bypass" pedals your clean sound should get a lot of interference from all the active circuits surrounding the signal chain. I know your signal would not be going through them but I'd still expect interference. Would have thought that they switched off to avoid this.

edit: Ah, right, It's grounded. I get it........ :)

Pete Cornish did a massive rant against true bypass, I think the general gist is that stretching your signal out over all those pedals weakens it significantly, like drinking through a really long straw or something.

But if you're into massive pedal boards, you can just stick something like an LPB-1 or a Super Hard On at the front of your chain and leave it on all the time. I'd rather boost the **** out of it with one buffer than get a load of buffered pedals. One buffer will colour your signal one way, but loads of buffers will do it loads of different ways. I think Pete Cornish seems like a bit of an elitist wnaker.
