As far as I know the wires are spliced into the rear lights of the car and this then powers the trailer lights, no need to connect to the battery.

I have to cut a 60mm square out of the centre of the bumper to let the hitch out,in doing so wire the plug into the spiced cable at the lights?
    yes?
    thanks

You need to be sure that there is not multiplex wiring as just splicing into these wires can cause damage to the control unit that runs the rear lamps

With a 99 car I would imagine it is normal wiring fitted.

To be safe wait til someone with direct knowledge says yay or nay.

Oh, and if you are doing it yourself do not use the scotch locks you get free with the tow bar. Water gets into them and they corrode both the trailer socket cables and your original wiring.

I'd be surprised if its not a Can bus system, if so its a pro job. It will need an adapter spiced/plugged (not sure re Avensis) to the existing loom. Don't try the old Scotchlock trick, It'll drive the car nuts. Get in touch with your local tow bar people.

Can bus is a brilliant system, but requires specialists when modifying. Generally not a DIY job (yet)

    Stand to be corrected.

You should be safe enough then!

Here is a guide for each wire.

    Yellow
    Left indicator
    Green
    Right indicator
    Red
    Brake light
    Black
    Left tail light
    Brown
    Right tail light
    Blue
    Fog lamp
    White
    Earth

Be careful not to touch any of the live wires off the bodywork (or any earthed point) and insulate them well after joining.

and keep the cables away from the exhaust.

The (normally) blue clips that go around the wire and pierce it with a sharp point.

Just strip back the insulation on the wire and join into it.

Do you think it's a good idea to be fitting a tow hitch that could be towing 3/4 tonne( or more, depending on how lawfull you want to be) of weight if you've no idea what you are doing? This will be subject to a lot of stress and isn't something that you can get right the 2nd time.
