Quick one; is it illegal to tow a car without tax and NCT. Looking at a project car that's for sale cheap without nct or tax and I'd need to get it a few miles down the road - is it illegal to tow it on the road?

My understanding would be that you have to transport it on a trailer or with a trade plate. You can't "drive" a car with no tax on a public road.

Is the car a mechanically propelled vehicle if it is being towed if it is not an MPV does it have to be taxed I think not e.g. a bicycle.

Should say maybe wrong on this but does not seem like an MPV to me

My understanding was that you could be done for drunk driving if you were sitting in your car with the ignition on, but not moving or intending to move - the test for the car being "active" was the ignition being on.

By the same logic, seeing as you'll have to have the ignition on to disable the steering lock, your car is "active" when you're towing it.

We need a TC Garda in on this thread...

Come on you are not going to get done for towing a car with no tax or nct even if by a miracle you happened to come across a check point.

OP didn't ask would you get done, they asked if it was illegal.

I can't advise if you'll get done or not, neither can you. All you can do is find out whether it's illegal, what the punishment is, what the likelihood of being caught is and then make your decision from there.
