    Hi.
Dunno if this belongs here because it's not a huge issue but i just wanted to get an opinion on this.
Basically, i'm living with a guy who NEVER opens his mouth.
    I mean NEVER.

I used to try making conversation with him when i first moved in a few months back but he would never speak spontaneously so i gradually gave up trying.
Now he hasn't opened his mouth in about 6 months.
It's just very uncomfortable (especially when you come home after a long day working and you want to watch a bit of telly an he's just sitting there, silent).
Anyone else ever live with someone like this- is he just a pr1ck?

Us silent types aren't all bad. I'm not much of a talker when in a housemate situation.. I just don't see the point in filling every living second with pointless conversation. It gets annoying and I'm quite content just doing my own thing.

If it bothers you that badly then talk to him about it (pun unintended).

pointless conversation, wtf, banter is something to be encouraged, if you rather play around in your own head than talk to the person sharing your air space your lacking in social skills and manners.

    No Liah i totally agree.
I'm quiet myself and i totally welcome appropriate silence.
You know the bit in Pulp Fiction where Uma Thurman's character says how she hates people who yap to fill awkward silences- i totally agree with her, but this guy is unbelievable.
    6 months- nothing.
Thanks- what do you say though- it's their prerogative all the same i guess.
(Having said all that I still maintain he's just an ignorant pr1ck tbh).

What makes it worse is that there's only 2 of us in the apartment.
There's nobody else to talk to.

Not all of us enjoy such titillating conversation such as "How was your day?" "Oh I stocked shelves today" or "I learned how to use the ice cream machine today" day in day out.

It gets old and really, what's the point..? Maybe if it was something interesting about people I knew or some exciting world events, sure, but it never is, it's just.. pointless conversation about nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Doesn't mean I lack manners or social skills, just means I have stuff I'm already focusing on or people I'm already talking to and I don't feel like repeating the exact same conversation I've had a thousand times before with a thousand different people.

It works for the situation I'm in.

And yeah that's understandable, I was mostly taking offense at drunkmonkey's assumption that all people who don't enjoy smalltalk are "freaks" and apparent social outcasts.

Try to talk to him about it, if not, then maybe look for somewhere else to move to, or get a pet?

I know what your saying about saying nothing i do enjoy the silence, I've enough people pulling out of me all day but when you live with people you have to be some way friendly, sitting there and saying nothing because you believe the other person dosen't warrant your time as there not as "intellectual" as you, is down right rude. I haven't met a person yet that's not worth talking to...we all learn from each other even if we don't realise it at the time...

he's been a rude prick, if he's not talking to you something is going on in the back of his head, i'd get out of that situation, it will turn nasty some day.

How can i put this without sounding like a prat- i'm well educated and insightful :p so (theoretically at least) intellect shouldn't be the reason.

you could just ask him what his problem is. Have to be something deeply wrong with a lad if he hasnt opened his mouth in 6 months. Something must be bothering him.

He is a cold human being, probably. Or else he could be masturbating to pictures of you naked, or to pictures of you two having sex that his mind created. And he is embarrased to talk to you in case, what if he could see what's on MY mind?
    I read this ****e somewhere.

I lived with a guy like this last year. It was depressing to come home from a day in work to see the light on and him watching American Chopper on Discovery channel in the living room. Any attempts at conversation, and I'm not talking "How was your day" crap but mentioning stuff on TV, noting books he was looking at, talking about stuff in the news or things that were happening in Dublin were given one word replies.

Eventually I moved out and I'm living in a busier house with more people... Although there's one guy there who hasn't left his room to talk to anyone since Friday! I think unsociable/shy/rude people are impossible to avoid.

Also, to all those on the defensive about being quiet, DON'T BE, I think the original poster wants a bit more than just an exchange of pleasentries and a chat about the weather. I'm pretty quiet myself but I can still talk about stuff without getting caught up in talking about nothing.
