I have a mark 5 golf and a few days ago, for no reason, an airbag fault light came on. My local mechanic used his diagnostic machine and it read that the upper limit was exceeded on the drivers side bag...

I have to get on to VW now and I don't know what to expect....yet another VW fault!!!

    what bill can I expect?

btw car was bought by me from new and has never been bumped

Check the connections under the seats, friend of mine has a mk5 and I cleared the airbag light for him months ago with vagcom. One of the connections under the passenger seat had been disturbed. Been fine since ;)

Me too, was just about to post about this.Should we remove the front seats to get access?

Just follow the wire from the seat belt receiver down under the seat unil you find a little box connector. Mke sure its joined together correctly. ifyou cant find the little box connector then you'll have to remove the seats to gain access. Carefull though because there's a highly explosive device called a pre tensioner attached to the side of the seat so dont go crossing any wires. Just check are both sides of the box connector joined together.

This is a problem in many cars from different manufacturers. Generally just look underneath and give all the connectors a good wiggle to try to clean any dirty contacts etc. This will turn the light off in many cars without any resetting.

Easily happens if you have passengers in the rear of the car frequently. They tend to accidentally kick the connection under the front seats when stretching their legs.

Happens alot in 3dr cars with the seats moving foward and back more frequently also. Alot of times simply disconnect and reconnect and clear the fault and the light will go out but for most cars this means having it put on a computer.

    OP here,

got it fixed by a VW technician .......laptop, software, other gadgets and about hour and a half....not sure what he did...seat was virtually removed though...awkward area to work on but got it done in time for NCT...then found out it couldn't fail on that! still glad it is done now though:D

How much were you charged for the work they did?

Poxy car. Found that one connection was slightly loose, stuck it back in but the airbag light is still on (as expected). I'd bring it to a garage to have it checked but it's my bro's car and he calls the shots, i.e, he'll never go to a garage for a single light. Oh well.

Try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and this might clear the code from the ECU. Just make sure you have radio code before you do...

Tell him it is well worth getting it fixed for his own safety even if it costs him a few euro to get it done. While the airbag light is on, none of the airbags/pretensioners in the car will work. If this was my car I would rather fork out 50euro to have the light put out for the peace of mind that if I was in an accident that I would be that bit safer.
