Yes back again but ages away still so don't panic. 24 hour comics day '09 will take place on 17th and 18th of October in the central hotel. We're expanding and taking two function rooms this year and adding a few smaller comic related events, however everything is still in early planning stages right now and I don't want to confirm anything until I know it's def 100% happening so keep an eye on the new website for updates closer to the event.

Reason I'm posting now is to let people know we're putting an anthology together as part of the event. It's a themed book and the theme is......."24".... [yes I know risking alot of Jack Bauer piss takes but I'm hoping people are a little more creative] Contributors are free to interpret this theme in whatever way they wish. Serious or lighthearted stories, slice of life or more abstract tales, superhero, alternative, manga, sunday funnies - all are welcome. As we are working with Childrens Book Ireland we are keeping the book to a PG-13 rating.

    Technical Information

Pages should be either Black and White or Grayscale.

    Page size: 21 cm H x 15 cm W
Submissions should be no more than 5 pages.

Finished stories only please, no “To be Continued’s….”

Scans should be done at 300 dpi.

For final submission send high res jpg or tiff to cliodhna AT ztoical DOT com. Please mark the subject of the email as "Anthology Submission" otherwise my spam filter may eat it.

    Deadline September 04th 2009

Contributors will, of course, keep all rights to their artwork and will get one contributor copy of the book. The anthology organizers will cover all the costs of printing and distributing the anthology.

Any questions or comments about the '24' anthology or 24 hour comics day please feel free to comment here, PM or email me.

    Edited to add:
    Workshops

As mentioned before we are working with Children's Book Ireland this year and as such are including a number of workshops to run along side 24 hour comics day. Even though the event is part of the Children's Book Festival we hope to offer something for all age groups with these workshops.
    • First up there will be a giant free for all comic jam for the younger kids. All the kids taking part will draw one big giant comic story that we'll cut up into sections so everyone can take a piece home.
    • Phil Barrett will be running a mini comic workshop for 8 to 12 years olds where they will make their own 7 page mini comic.
    • Very excited to announce that the international Manga Museum in Kyoto are sending one of their Artists, Tsuyoshi Ogawa, to run a manga assistant drawing workshop. This workshop hopes to give those taking part an understanding of how comics are produced in Japan and what it is like to work as a manga assistant. Participants will get to try their hand at inking with both nib and brush. We will be running two workshops, one for kids [kids under 10 need to be accompanied by an adult] and one for teens/adults. Ogawa-San and his translator will be around to answer any questions on Manga that people might have through out the day.
    • Sarah McIntyre, Children's Book Illustrator and creator of Vern & Lettuce for the DFC, will be running a workshop and reading from her new book "Morris the Mankiest Monster".
    • The Comic Cast will host a round table talk with Irish comic creators focusing on getting started and self publishing your work both in print and on the web. Full list of participants will be posted closer to the event. I would like to encourage people to either comment here or get in touch with me if they have any questions/topics they would be interested in seeing discussed during the talk.

The above are the workshops/talks that are confirmed to take place so far, others will be added once details are confirmed.

24 hour comics day is 100% free for all talking part, however due to space some of the workshops will have limited numbers. Please email me (contact email is listed on the 24 hour comics day website) if you wish to take part in one of the workshops as any that prove really popular I can look into maybe running twice.

Yay, I'm looking forward to this. Anthology should be good, but I'm really looking forward to finding out what shape the whole thing will take in the end. It might be worth bringing along a gag in case AdamDeclan doesn't take to the whole "watch your mouth while there are kids around thing" and insists on making more "freedom of speech" proclamations like last time. Not that I was involved in any of that *cough*.

Already looking forward to this. Had a great time last year, was given an entire bottle of Buckfast if i remember correctly. Also, i drew a comic with naked people.

ztoical your an organizational fiend. If you need any help though, i'm more than happy.

    Hi folks,

Updates on some of the goings on for this years 24 hour comics day. Reminder first that the anthology is open for submissions, please head to the website for further information. Just to note you don't have to attend the event to submit to the anthology.

Just to update information on one of the workshops:

Sarah McIntyre's workshop will be a 'Character Design workshop'. She will also talk about her experience working as a freelance artist, crossing over from children's book illustration to comic books and contributing to the DFC.

You get many submissions for this one? Interesting to see what everyone came up with...:D

Yes I did thanks and I got a bunch of other very interesting ones as well, couple from the usually suspects and a bunch from some new faces so it's looking good. Want to post some art but don't want to give away too much of anyone's story as it's a collection of short pieces so here's a really small taste [it's one panel from the first page of a 4 page story from Ken Niimura]

    Antipersonal01.jpg

There is wiggle room if people are working on something please PM here or email me to let me know you need some extra time.

I would also like to include some editorial stuff, like what was done on the back page of boards zine last year [it was just one page listing some recent Irish comic publications and a brief blurb] so if anyone has a comic that they've published in the last lets say 6 months or will be publishing one in the next few months [and I mean will be publishing, set date, all ready to roll to printers] then PM me here or email me [email is on the Irish 24 hour comics day website] Or if anyone has a webcomic that is currently updating [ie you have updated it with new work at least twice in the past 2 months] get in touch.

There will also be two tables at the event one for free stuff and one for selling stuff. The free table does exactly what it says on the tin - it is a table for people to place any free comics they might be giving out, flyers/postcards/badges/stickers/etc for their website/webcomic/event/project...just check with me on the day of the event before putting stuff on the table so we can make sure adult themed stuff is in the right section. The sales table will be a table selling comics similar to the set up at Caption in Oxford except there is no charge. People leave their comics with the organizers to sell and at the end of the day collect their comics and/or cash. You can leave comics in at any time but we would prefer them in before noon so we've time to make the table look all pretty.[/email]

Hey folks, I know this is kind of an announcement thread, hope it's okay if I ask a few questions on here, i figured it'd be better than starting a new thread about the event, but if you feel that would be better then feel free to delete the post and PM me, I'll ask my question in a new thread. I don't want to derail anything.

I'm very inexperienced with creating comics... I've tried to get a few things off the ground with some artists, but they've always ended up flopping heroically, so I've come to the conclusion that if i ever want anything done i'll have to do it myself. Trouble is, i'm not a good artist, and I have little to no experience at actually producing anything beyond the scripts I've done.

Is it cool to just turn up at this event with just pencils and paper and start drawing? Is there any kind of basic skill level that someone wanting to show their face would have to have? what kind of time does it kick off at, and do you have to register anywhere beforehand?

It seems like a great opportunity for me to learn some stuff, so I'd like to know a little bit more...

Is it cool to just turn up at this event with just pencils and paper and start drawing?

Yep that's exactly what people do.

Is there any kind of basic skill level that someone wanting to show their face would have to have?

There is no skill level required - the event is open to people of all ages and skill levels. We've had young folks, old folks, college students, professionals and first timers come along. The event is not a competition, everyone works on their own comic at their own pace. You set your own goals for yourself based on your skills. The basic goal is to do 24 pages in 24 hours but not everyone can stay 24 hours so they set their own goal like 12 pages in 12 hours or some people know they work slow so will just aim to have a finished piece [start, middle, end, with any number of pages] While others work on doing one page comics and just see how many they can do in a set time.
what kind of time does it kick off at, and do you have to register anywhere beforehand?

The event starts at 11am on Saturday 17th with the first workshop at 11.30, the actual 24 hour drawing session starts at 1pm and will run until 1pm on sunday. People do not need to register for the 24 hour drawing section but anyone planning to attend a workshop should send their name to me as the workshops will be first come first served. The full program of workshops and times will be posted on the website tuesday morning.

Hope that answers all your questions, if you've anymore feel free to post here or contact me privately.

Hey folks, less then two weeks to go and 24 hour comics day has been getting a fair bit of press. Above is a mention in last saturdays Indo weekend magazine, we had an interview along with Childrens Book Ireland on City Channel last week and myself and fellow boards member Livingtargets recorded a piece for the Den art program Kazoo to air next week....phew!

We ended up with 50 pages of comic goodness for the anthology which is 18 more then what I was hoping for so thanks to everyone. We're printing a short run for the day and will be selling the book below print cost at all of €1. We will also offer the anthology as a free pdf download for a very short stint after the event.

Edit* forgot to add we've teamed up with A4 art supply and we'll have some give aways of art supplies on the saturday.

Hey Padman....will PM you to double check I've the right person.

Yes to book workshop spaces you need to email info@irish24hourcomics.com [don't worry if you've emailed my address, we changed it about a month ago but anything coming to me just gets forwarded to the new address] Email your name and the name of workshop your booking and if there's space in the workshop I'll add you to the list. You don't book for the Comic Cast talk, that's free seating :)

The website says to book either in advance or sign up on the day but encourages people to pre book to avoid disappointment. I honestly didn't think we'd have as much interest in all of the workshops as we have had and the mini comic workshop and the manga workshops are now full and the others are filling up. I've been in touch with the hotel to see if we can arrange more space to either increase the size of the workshops or perhaps run them twice but I don't know if we'll be able.

It won't suit everyone but we are running two manga workshops in Navan Library on the Monday 19th in the afternoon and one at the Blackbird Library in Kilkenny on the Tuesday 20th at 5pm.

    *edit* information for the Navan Library workshops - 3.30pm to 4.45pm ages 10 to 13 and 5pm to 6.15pm ages 14 to 18 ... email sflanagan@meathcoco.ie
    Blackbird Gallery information 5pm to 6.30pm ages 10 to 18 ...email info@theblackbirdgallery.com

Mods please feel free to remove if it's not allowed to post that information.

Cutting it very fine [and giving me a mini heart attack in the process] the anthology is back from the printers and looking pretty good if I do say so myself....def worth the whole one euro we are charging for it. Reminder to everyone they are welcome to bring their own comics along to sell - just check the website [link in my sig] for all the info.

Hope to see some boards people tomorrow at some point!

Woot, am on my way there! At heathrow right now waiting for flight, should be into dublin before 12 and at the hotel before 1. Laptop & webcam are with me for some webcast/skype based nonsense with Bob "El Guiri" Byrne, Ronan "G'day mate!" Kennedy, along with whoever else harangues us online. See you all there :)

Ditto on that. Fair play to Cliodhna. Was a superbly organised and fun event.

We spent the whole day there on Saturday talking to comic folks on camera for www.mixtape.ie so expect a video report on the event in the coming weeks.

We had even more fun hosting the "Getting Started in small comics and web comics" panel with guests Philip Barrett, Hilary Lawlor and Paddy Brown. If you weren't there on the day, the entire recording is now available to download or listen online over at www.thecomiccast.com

Cheers to everyone for their support...great to see so many boards.ie heads coming along at the weekend. I've posted a heap of images I nicked from Tsuyoshi on my blog.

Still trying to get all the sugar I consumed over the weekend out of my system. I'm going to post a downloadable pdf of the anthology sometime in the next week and we still have some print copies left which will be on sale at Thought Bubble in November and I'll be dropping some copies into Sub City hopefully sometime in the next few weeks. Some people have already posted their comics on their blogs but it will be a bit before they are all posted on the website as some people worked pretty large and might take them some time to scan them in.

As always any comments and feedback to help improve the event is welcome, you can post here or email me.

Thanks for organizing a great event ztoical.

Wish i could have stayed for the 24 hours. Had a great time drawing away and checking out what everyone was doing, it's amazing to see an entire room working on comics.

Is everyone uploading their comic to comicspace again this year? I really want to read Tie wearing Lizard Scientists!

Yeah they'll be uploaded when I get them from people so might take a little while - I know some people have already got there's online but a few mentioned it would be a little bit before they got near a scanner. I shall post when I've got the majority up.

For anyone who couldn't make it on the day you can now download for free and for a limited time [until the 18th of November] the anthology we printed for the day - as reviewed on the most recent issue of the comic cast :D

There are still about 40 print copies which will on sale at Thought Bubble on the 21st and Subcity Dublin and the Comixstop Waterford [when I get over the damn swine flu and can drop copies in]
