    ...ever run guitar FX pedals as inserts on your board? For things other than guitar I mean.

    Yes, as an insert or on an auxiliary.

    Usually to dirty stuff up but sometimes with something like a Boss DD6 or Electro Harmonix Micro Synth to 'play' something live in the track.

    yup. ive been running differant synths thru a fender frontline distortion pedal for years.

    very common, back in the day ravers used distortion pedals on the 303's and the roland space echo also used with various h/w devices.

    ive a really really crappy zoom multipedal that can turn out some really nice, and harsh, distortion if you throw a mid to high range synth into it. though if theres not delay on the synth it tends to sound like gash
