I want to buy malarone tablets but they are so expensive in Ireland. I heard you can get tablets cheaper in asia. I'll be going to vietnam. Does anyone know if it's easy to buy tablets there and what are the different brands available?

    thanks.

Presume there is a reason for taking Malarone instead of Deoxcyclin which is a lot cheaper?
you can buy it from the UK from the website

    www.travelpharm.com

I had a UK script for it but I would say you'd be alright with one from the ROI as I'm fairly sure pharmacists in the UK willl fill a ROI script (would probably be worth emailing them though)

Doxycyclin is just a mild antibiotic. I took it for acne years ago and think i became immune : l It also makes your skin hyper-sensitive to the sun.

I think malarone are the best but also most expensive so i'd rather not buy here in Ireland.

Malarone is not available in most Asian countries because they don't want mozzies building up a resistance to it. If you are visiting a high risk area, get your Malarone before you go. If it's offered to you in Asia it'll probably be a dodgy fake.

you dont need a prescription to get anti malarial drugs in the uk, they sell them over the counter, just pop up to boots in belfast.

I know for certain that malarone wasn't available in 06.

I know it's expensive but remember that it's covered by the Drugs Payment Scheme so you'll only have to pay €80 (or whatever it is now) max which isn't too bad. Doxycycline is a pain in the ass the way you have to take it for a month after leaving the malaria zone and it also interferes with the contraceptive pill.

Above all, be sure to consult a doctor if you haven't already done so.

That would be strange since it was licensed in the UK in 97 and launched properly in 2001.
Also does the Drug Payment Scheme pay out for drugs that aren't required (which technically they're not as a preventative, know UK schemes don't cover them)

Also Really-Stressed is that true?I got written a script when I got it (GP up north) and didn't think any antiboitics were over the counter

I'd say he's saying 'malarone wasn't available in asia in 06' and it's still not. It's used as a treatment rather than a preventative measure so it's not sold there.

I checked boots UK, the cost is £143 for 65 malarone tabs, in Ireland it's E283, a significant difference.
You need a UK prescription though. Haven't seen the over-the-counter ones.

I'll be in the malaria areas for about 2 months (volunteering). Then i have to take them for a week after.
