Name a subject you did in school, which you thought was absolutely pointless at the time but actually comes in quite handy in "real life"?

    Mitching classes.
It wasn't on the curriculum but it has served me well in getting to know how the world works & how to think fast.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I think I was pretty much dead-on with the uselessness assessment... Irish, History, PE, memorizing long gibberish names of different bacteria in biology (pff, big mistake not taking physics I think).

Pythagora's theorem is definately the most useful. I've used it countless times in measuring slopes of things.

    a2+b2=x2

That depends on the kind of party stove. The contours of the body is made up many slopes, turns and curves.. ;)

    I win I think.

I don't think it complies with the "beneficial in real life" bit...

Did it for a day. One lecture was enough to put me off the whole subject even though everyone was bragging on about it being "an easy A!"...

English and maths for sure but I always knew they were important so that probably doesn't count, although the only subject I can say I don't use aspects of regularly is business studies. Only thing I got out of that subject that is any use is when I spent two weeks of classes teaching myself to learn the alphabet backwards just to do something to alleviate the boredom. Spent another two weeks learning "how much is that doggy in the window" backwards. Christ that class was boring.

Maths - Algebra and BODMAS are a big part of programming when you think about it most programing is algebra and BODMAS helps keep calculation code tidy.

Hated sums with a vengeance. I mean FUKCING HATED HHHHHAAAAAAAAAAATED HATE HATED sums.

All you need is to be able to: add, subtract, divide, multiply; the rest is absolutely useless shyte (unless your going to be a maths teacher).

Now I develop mapping software and sums and trigonometry is my bread n butter.

And play poker so probability is my friend.

Isn't that a planet in Battlestar Gallactica? If they ever land on Fortran I'll let you know :D

Most usful thing I learned is how to avoid beatings from angry T-Square weilding Tech Drawing teachers.

That and Tech Drawing - it was beaten into us! ;)

Maths and Physics for me. I've even ended up using a ****load of trig and algebra! When students say "what is this used for anyway" I dunno why teachers don't say "For designing bridges, and videogames and stuff like that".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,845 ✭✭✭Jet Black

I asked my teacher why anything other than basic math's is needed. He could not answer me.
But load's of thing's need algebra. Accounting, finance, construction, engineering, design, programmeing, most science.
    Thick cnut.
