Dunno bout everyone else, but I use me Garmin and Sporttracks to keep logs.
Training really depends on your goals. Some of us are racing, some of us are doing long distance sportives, multi day events and some of us are trying to get fit. The training you may wish to do will depend on where you fall in.

As someone who is starting out and going to cycle 3 days a week (3 days running and one rest day), what sort of training would be best - as in should i just push it every day or should i take a longer slower cycle at the weekend.

The reason i was hoping there was a log area, was so i could get an idea of what sort of miles and times people were doing (and i do know there are a wide variety of abilities)

What is your ultimate goal? To be able to do long weekend spins? 100km+?

Whatever you have time for - ideally a bit of everything. Train moderately, as the biggest risk is overtraining. You know you're overtraining when you can't push hard on your "hard" days. Try and finish every ride thinking you could have gone harder & further.

im not 100pc sure of my final goals at this stage but i guess i would like to be able to do a 100k tour at some stage. ideally just like to be able to join a club or group on a spin - ie have the endurance and speed to stay with a half decent group eg be able to go on a boards spin or whatever

I use a template which I modified from Joe Friel, just to keep a weekly log and kinda ties in my Annual training plan ..but also you can use an online log I use mycyclinglog.com

I'd be up for a training log sub forum. First proper spin on my new roadie tonight so why not?

Also the fine people in the A/R/T forum have a 1000 mile challenge which could be a bit of fun if modified for cycling... (might have to have a twin thread for the 'truffle hunters' here too).

I reckon they would give good motivation for those of us who are new and trying to up their game and I'm certain it would provide a boasting platfom for the more serious boardies present...

    Kenny,
if you are starting from scratch, i.e. not been on a bike in anger for quite some time, then you could start with a nice 20km spin, something flat. Try and avoid coming home straight into the wind if possible. That distance is not too long but it will be enough to let you gauge where you are at. Then you can increase that distance by about 10 or 20% every week. That way you will do it right: i.e. build up the distance and endurance without burning yourself out.

If 20km looks like it will be too much, then drop it down to 15 or 10 and build from there.

If you are already capable of longer distances, then you can use that as your base.

You can go for some shorter spins during the week and then use the weekend to do a longer one where you push the boat out a bit, but not too much. Remember to take a few days off the bike so you can recover.

    P
