Job Seekers Allowance while Going to school

    Hello,

I was recently made redundant and because I received a redundancy package, I have a wait time before I can get Job Seekers allowance. I am currently looking for a job, but if I can't find anything I'm considering going back to school to do a Masters. If I become a fulltime student, will I still be able to receive Jobseekers allowance? The course I'm thinking of doing is at night, so theoretically I'd still be able to look for a job and even work if I get a job, although considering the potential study load, it wouldn't be easy. I also understand that some programs give a tuition discount to unemployed, but is that still applicable if you are receiving JSA?

    Hi

I want to return to formal edu too. I believe it is quite good. If you have been out of edu for 2 years and unemployed for 3 months you can get the good benefits. citizens info and social welfare sites have lots of good info.

    Hi TaraK5,

You're right if you have been out of edu for 2 years and unemployed for 3 months you can get the good benefits, but only for 2nd level education. In September when the course starts I'll be unemployed for more than 3 months, but not the minimum 9 months for 3rd level education.

"If you wish to attend a second level course you must be getting one of the social welfare payments listed below for at least 6 months (From 1 May 2009, 3 months if you are a jobseeker and out of the formal education system for at least 2 years). If you wish to attend a third level course you must be getting one of the social welfare payments listed below for 12 months (9 months if you are assessed and approved by FÁS under the National Employment Action Plan or from 1 May 2009, a Facilitator from DSFA)."

Since the course is at night I'd assume I can still take the course and collect Jobseeker's Benefit and if I do get a job, continue on in the full time course at least until Christmas and then switch to part time. The only question is, would I still be entitled to the discounted tuition?

I assume you'd be entitled to discounted tuition. Most people who are unemployed in this country are entitled to a social welfare payment so it wouldn't make sense to give a discount only to people who aren't.

It's not like the dole is enough for people to save up for tuition (in most cases)
