Thinking of buying a quad. I was asked if I was intrested in a two wheel drive 400 cc. Wasn't told about the make but wanted to find out if two whell drive was any good before making any inquires. would only be used for light farm work (if any) and more for getting around

I have a 2WD drive and is perfect for tipping around on. My father uses it for herding and doing handy jobs (carrying stakes and wire, carrying nuts, etc, etc)

Its a 250cc Lifan quad bought new last year and has very little work done. It will do 80 km/h max speed :D I think he's going to sell it and buy a 400cc one though. He wants it to be able pull a bigger trailer through not so dry land so 4WD would be needed.

Two wheel drive is grand for tippin around, will pull a light trailer on dry ground. If your looking to tow on anything other than hard ground, or anything heavier than one ewe in a trailer then you need 4wd and not less than 300cc i would say.

A question to throw out there.

I am also looking at buying a quad.
I am also in the middle of getting my lawns done around the house and looking ahead, i will have to purchase a ride on lawn mower in the not too distant future.

Is there anywhere in the republic or up north that sell lawnmower attachments for Quads?
do ye see where im coming from?

I know exactly what you mean!! Something like a mini topper. I'm sure it would be possible to find something. I've thought about it myself but never looked too hard into it. I'd imagine it would be something driven by a small petrol engine like current lawnmowers. Perhaps with 2 spinners instead of 1

Or a trailer system with the blades driven by the trailers' wheels and some sort of shaft, belt and gears.

I've seen a home built job once with bits and pieces of a mower converted to some sort of trailer with it's own engine ( horticulture rotovator engine if I'm not mistaken ) pulled by a Honda 4x4 quad ( can't remember cc )

My push mower is coming to the end of it's life and I was thinking the same as you using a gang mower behind my quad as I have 1/4 acre of lawn. Only problem is that my quad won't turn in tight corners.

I thought about this before but for the price of a mower for a quad I could by a good second hand lawn mower
I got a 22hp diesal john deere 455 ride on mower with diff lock and 4foot cut for 3k mighty machine some have 4wd and pto lift arms even front loader
they cost over 17k new but there are bargens in the second hand market
A mower for quad would cost that cos it would be hard to find one second hand

Jaysus thats some machine! Never seen one of those before!
ATV's usually have a very bad turning circle so you will still probaly have to go around the edges with a push mower. Also a 4wd quad will bite hard into the ground when your on full lock which could do serious damage to your lawn.

Getting back to 2wd or 4wd.
The 4wd costs alot more than 2wd,and very recommendable if you have alot of wet and mucky ground. You CAN get away to a certain degree with a 2WD,IF you keep good tyres on it and get very aggressive tyres as close to a tractor pattern as you can.It can be helped if you can get a small 2nd hand electric winch for it in case you really get bogged in.Done it plenty of times myself with a 2wd.:)

tractamotors in cavan town sell mowers which attach to quads , thier less than two grand but i wouldnt recomend that system myself , a quad has a poor turning circle and they are hard to steer , you would be very tired after mowing the lawn , on top of that you have to put petrol in both the mower and the quad , besides thier is serious value to be had in buying a ride on lawn mower at the moment , beit new or second hand , building has slowed therefore lawn and groundscare work has suffered including sales of lawnmowers , as regards what lawnmower you buy , i would recomend the snapper or the simplicity which are more or less the same mower , they are two of the many lawnmowers which are not a castlegarden , john deere , massport ,massey are all castlegarden with a different badge and thier distinctly average , you need close to 20 hp in a good ride on lawnmower , 17 hp would be acceptable but any lower , forget about it

depends on what your going to use it for.

general trucking around, rounding up cows etc then not only is 2wd fine, but it's also savage craic. on a wet paddock with some mildish tyres you can drift and slide around all day long with minimal damage to the grass. who says bringing in the cows has to be boring?

(and before someone jumps down my throat about racing around sensitive dairy cows who should not be rushed, if you do it right and keep your distance you can get them all up and moving at a nice relaxed pace while you hoon around the field)

and the management accepts no responsibility for you being a muppet and rolling the quad because you a) cant ride it properly (it's a bike, not a tractor, you ride it) or b) have ground thats too rough for sideways action.

a bit of weight on the front really helps when towing too.
