Installing a privately purchased Sky+ box

    Hi Folks,

New poster so apologies in advance ... I have an Octo LNB installed and 4 pairs of RG Coax in place and all working fine on my basic Sky box. I can buy a newish Sky+ box privately and install is no problem. Question is - will the recording and pause/live features work with my ordinary subscription or do I have to contact Sky and do some upgrade?

Reason I ask is because I have cancelled my land line since I was originally installed and I don't know if a land line is required to move onto Sky+. Contractually a land line was required for the first 12 months however that has elapsed 3 years ago. A lot of people must be in the same boat with the switch over to broadband and dropping land lines???

    Many thanks, Charlie.

just ring sky to activate the new box. (presume you are subscribed to a package)

    no land line required.

as above ring sky - they will have to activate the box on your account. You dont need a landline as its not a new account (although nowadays you can pay a one off fee but that wouldnt be needed here)
The pause/rewind features only work if you pay for sky plus (think its 15e a month)

Jees I didn't realise I had to pay 15e per month for Sky+, really? Thats kinda rained on my parade.

Guys am I better off just going to the local shopping centre and upgrading to a Sky+ box and keeping my old box as a FTA in one of the bedrooms?

What deals are out there at the mo? I have no land line, existing Sky customer, I have the LNB and coax all installed. Should I contemplate the HD+ box altogether, I dont currently have a HD tv so it might be stupid but it would future proof me for a bit.

    Many thanks,

    Charlie

You dont pay 15e for Sky+ anymore as long as you are a subscriber of any sort

Current deals as follows for exisitng customers

Sky + €149 install €50.. no phoneline currently required

Sky HD €49. Install €50 no phonline currently required

However you will need to take a hd sub to avail of the hd box @ €49..this will increase your sub by a total of €14.75 a month...hope that helps

    Not true..

its FREE. I have a HD box and dont pay anything extra.. only my €30 ish per month.

.just get a +box . ring sky to pair card . thats it. No extra to pay.

just whatever you are paying per month now..

    Hope that clarifies it.

I was aware when existing subscribers upgrade from Sky to Sky+ their existing subscription does not go up but I had thought that an upgrade to Sky HD does entail an extra monthly subscription. You say you have a HD box and do not pay extra. Is this the full HD package, do you recieve the Sky HD channels?

I'd expect he doesn't have a HD subscription on his HD box, and just uses it as a Sky+ box. And still get BBC HD, Luxe HD and ITVHD, which are FTA and don't require a HD sub.

Guys just a quick post to close this off - yesterday I called Sky and went to cancellations ready to throw in the towel and cancel the lot. I got a Sky+ box for 49 euro, no install charge, no 37 euro extra for not having a land line, nothing extra per month. Stick the boot in and Sky will treat you better. Engineer in 3 days. A proper result.

    Charlie

P.S. See my post to suedenim today (28/05/09)
